Picked up our first Jones Snowboards last season and paired them with Union Bindings. The wife rode her Flagship more than anything and absolutely loves it. My Aviator only has a few days on it and is ready to go for this season. Also picked up some new 686 insulated pants and ThirtyTwo TMTwo XLT Boots which I am taking to REI to heat mold this weekend. Bring it.

I have a new job thats gonna kill my season. toilet

Which probably means that there will be epic snow in the sierras. You're welcome cheers

Just in case I couldn't pass on a deal for Burton EST Genesis X Bindings to put on my skeleton key. Everything else this season is old.

got my New Years trip booked at Mammoth. let's hope for some snow.

long shot, anyone have experience with Korua snowboards shrug when I got my Jones Flagship they didn't have the 165w out yet. i could use a little more surface area for powder. Looking at selling my 163w Flagship and getting a 164 Pencil

No, but that thing looks pretty wide. 26.9 cm waist on the 164 (my Slayblade 163w is 26.3cm). Surprised they don't call it a "Wide".

Do you ever have an issue with the straps coming loose? Union now has an updated hardware kit to correct this if you do. Just a heads up!

was up in Seattle last week and stopped into Evo. they said all the Korua boards are built wide. specs yep, they're wide. got a 26.9 Neversummer "wide" so that's good for me. The nose is huge at 324. Was also looking at the Dart. wondering how their construction is. and weight. there were none at Evo when I went there.

Never ridden one but I've been eyeing them for a while. Love their shapes, clean aesthetics and their vids are always my favorites. Let me know how it rides.

Like Stu said, my experience has been that they are solid. Don't think I care for the mini disk 4x2 as much as a standard 4x4 mount, but its supposed to allow the board to flex better underfoot..??..

Once on a really cold day I did have some ice pack into the toe strap where it meets the baseplate and couldn't push them forward enough to go over the cap of my boot.

How much do you want for the Flagship?

My resort board is a 162w Welcome to the West and my split is a Jones Explorer.

If the Flagship was a split I would be interested. Thinking maybe I need a stiffer split, and a more fun resort board to fill out the quiver. I also have a 158 Rome Agent but it's a 2006 so I mostly consider that a loaner board.

haven't thought of a price yet. Mine isn't a split. PM if interested. It's in pretty damn good condition. ridden no more than 10 days, if that.

Supposedly something on tap for the Sierra over this week and weekend. I will be going up on Friday, skiing Friday and Saturday and maybe Sunday. I have to go up to open our ski lease, otherwise I might skip it. To anyone going up this weekend be VERY careful. It is going to be a couple of feet of pow on dirt and rocks. I'm going to stay pretty much on piste, I'll let everyone else pack the first base down. I've seen some nasty injuries on early season pow days. Last year a buddy of mine, who has lived in Tahoe for 20 years, blew out his knee skiing pow over a rock field at Squaw in November. Having lived there for 20 years, he really should know better.

I'm betting on 20"+ for Squaw Valley... Maybe 12"+ for Mammoth... We'll see how it stacks up.

Sunny weather moves in for California next week but is supposed to be short lives with more chance for storms coming off the Pacific around the end of the month.

I like this. jam_on

After owning the same Bonfire snowboard pants for the last 12 years or so (hands down the best article of clothing that I've owned, period), they're getting badly frayed in places. So I guess I have to bite the bullet and get a new pair. Stuff like that I don't want to buy online since want to try it on, get an idea of fit, warmth, flexibility, etc.

Now I probably should have asked this before Black Friday roflmao but anyone have suggestions on where to get cheap/reasonably priced, quality gear in Orange County area?

On another note, man it was a crying shame when that outlet store in Bishop across from the casino closed down.

there was a sign all last year that the outlet shop in Bishop was going to move to a new location next to the bowling alley. not sure if they did or not. The Waverave outlet across the road from Mahogany Meats can have good deals

Heading to Mt Hood this weekend. Looking good.

As for gear, Sierra Trading Post just opened a retail outlet 30 minutes north of us. Check their site for deals.

Why not stay in Washington? Snoqualmie Pass would be closest to Gig, yes? You ski there yet? Never got there myself.

I skied last weekend at Mammoth and had fun. The snow came in wet and really bonded onto the rocks. I skied groomers on Saturday morning then lapped Dropout 1 on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. It was really fun for this time of year, the rocks were easily avoided. Unfortunately I can't go up this weekend, this storm should really get things going.

I'm in the market for a new stick and thought I'd ask you boys. Looking for a one board quiver. Mostly East coast groomers/ice. But I do get out west every year for work. I've been on an old cambered board I've had for years that is finally being retired.
I primarily stay out of the park but do like to hit some jumps here and there. Mix in a little bit of switch but not enough to necessitate a full on twin.
I keep going back and forth between some of the hybrid rocker/camber and more camber boards.
I'm very intrigued by a few boards:
Jones (Flagship. Even more so with the Explorer, due to it's slightly more playful characteristics.)
Yes Pick Your Line
Nitro Woodcarver

...and I thought there were too many surfboard models...
Any insight would be appreciated as it's difficult to interpret snowboarders describe ride feel.

Also, I've been snowboarding since I was 11 and would say I'm intermediate-advanced.
Do I show my tits now or after?

i'd recommend the Flagship. It's as close to a one board quiver for more of a freerider type. has enough camber in the feet to have control on hard pack, but for weeks old hard pack I'll go all camber. will handle powder too easily. I like my Flagship, but they really didn't have a correct size for me out yet when I bought it so been riding something undersized a bit. It's a step down from my all camber Never Summer Heritage (circa 2011-ish) so it's a easy transition when the snow is softer. Personally I like the Directional Camber boards as they can hold when bombing groomers. Haven't tried a hybrid rocker/camber yet. just don't know if that will wash out at high speed, which I'm not wanting to try out.

If looking into jones boards, your riding style sounds more suited for the mountain twin or ultra mountain twin. Jones himself calls the ultra mountain twin more versatile than the flagship. There are some good short clips comparing this years boards below. Flagship is a rad board though and really cant go wrong with it.

Agreed. Other boards you might check out:

Capita Mercury
Yes Typo
Burton Deep Thinker

Flagship/Explorer don't make sense to me if switch capability is at all important to you.

I switched from a 10 year old cambered board (Burton Uninc) to a Mercury late last season, and after riding in a bit of powder over the weekend, a little rocker in the tips is a game changer and it definitely DOES NOT wash out at high speed.

the Capita Spring Break boards are pretty rad. https://www.capitasnowboarding.com/snowboards/spring-break-powder only got a chance to look at the 151 but it's a cool shape that the 161 could work for me. but the zero camber for Mammoth didn't sound fun once that place gets tracked out. Plus $700+ price range.

just ordered a Korua. with shipping board was $75 cheaper than buying from Evo in the states. Plus 3 day shipping from Germany!

The K2 Manifest looks pretty nice. Directional Twin (same nose / tail specs, but 3/4" setback on the binding mounts). Mostly Camber with a bit of rocker at each end to loosen it up and give a bit more float.

I'd ride a Wide, but they make it standard width too.

Ive always thought K2 makes some of the coolest looking boards, if that sort of thing matters to you.

The K2 Standard has their old Flatline Tech, which I have on my K2 Slayblade and really like. Basically Flat Camber that doesn't curve up or down. Trying for a happy medium and IMO it works well. Looks like they added a tiny pit of rocker at the tips for good measure.

Again, Directional Twin, so same shape all around just set back 3/4" on the binding mounts. Lower price too.

That board was a lifesaver for those with adult-sized feet.

I think the board I'm riding is a Gnu. 163. I'm not sure. Bought it a while back and I've since forgotten. roflmao

the one I rented must have been circa '92-ish. it was a directional board, not a twin tip

Took a random trip to Portland last week and ended up getting a day at Timberline. Beautiful day, limited terrain, but super fun. Just got back from a couple fun groomer days at Kirkwood. Pretty much everything is open, though plenty of obstacles once you venture off piste. Finally got a chance to get the new board dialed. Thing carves like a mofo, and definitely a lot better holding the rail heelside than my old board ever could. Thanks Q_Surf, board rec was on point! Can't wait to get it into some deep stuff.

All hard pack today. All that camber was perfect. Its a medium weight board and stiff but not to stiff. Board is a rocket ship! Goes so fast. If you aint careful itll try to kill you. Not sure if its the factory wax but it just glides like crazy. Doesnt want to stop

Friday I skied Mammoth and hit mostly dropout 1. It was firm but edgable, with some fun pockets. The last two days have been a blast in Dave's, perfect Mammoth windbuff, lots of spray.

Super sick Dirksen Derby weekend at Bachelor. My 13 year old managed to grab 3rd in the 14 and under grom division (he's wanted a podium in this event for years). Lots of super rippers shredding the course and the mountain (Jeremy Jones, Austen Sweetin etc.). Alex Lopez raced on a Lib snow skate. Always such a rad fun event that fully embodies what snowboarding should be. I was stoked to be up there on a board again after the 22 month odyssey I have had with my broken leg. Good times with great people in our amazing shred community raising money for great causes (Protect Our Winters, Oregon Adaptive Sports, etc.).

Our weather forecast looks wet and warm coming up so fingers crossed we get snow and not the alternative. Hope everyone here scores some pow over the holidays!

Speaking of Austen Sweetin, if you haven't watched this, do it now. He's easily one of my favorite riders these days. Watch it all the way through.... there's a lot packed into 10 minutes..

The Phil Hansen (in the orange hat) clips at 6:13 are so mental... He's a pro skater for Lib Tech but maybe snowboards better than he skates.

Rode Mammoth today. Couple days late but was up for work so I'll take what I can get. Good amount of snow for this time of year and the quality was pretty damn good in certain spots. Surprisingly empty too considering how close we are to Christmas.

Dave's run was the best but the traverse on a snowboard in the wind was a bitch so I only did it twice. Couple of surprisingly good windblown stuff by chair 9 but the lower parts had shit coverage.

Anyone have some good step-in binding rec's? I'd rather not drop $300+ on new bindings, I'm actually looking for a decent one less than $150. I see there's some in that price range, just not sure about their durability. Need a large size for my 12 boots, for all-mountain riding. Thanks in advance. cheers

step in-s? there's really only Flow left and the new Burton step in's, but those require special boots

Dang, meant to say strap ins. . foreheadslap Just your typical SB bindings. Yeah, not looking at replacing my boots either. Never had the toe cap strap, do you like those?

the toe caps are pretty standard now. they do relieve pressure on the toes. also good for circulation. my front foot toes would sometimes go numb on the chair lift with over the boot strap fronts. It's peak season so finding something good on sale is kind of tough. maybe could score something on craigs'list? I've been using Union bindings and like them. Had a Ride set of bindings and they were pretty good.

these could be a decent buy

Thanks Stu, I will look into those. I feel like I'm out of the loop on SB gear, as its been awhile since I've upgraded my equipment. My toes go numb too, hope the toe cap will help that. Always thought it was the boots.

I think Union bindings are probably the best bang for your buck these days.

Keep in mind that at the $150 price point you're going to get a relatively flexy binding regardless of brand. Not necessarily a bad thing, but something to keep in mind. If you can bump it up a hundred bucks, Union Force is a good all mountain binding and cheaper than direct competitors from Burton, Rome, etc. Union Flight if flexy sounds good to you.

I like having Burton bindings though since no matter where you are, the shop's likely to have replacement parts if you find yourself in a jam.

I second the Union binding rec. I went for the Falcors and love them, though a bit more pricey.

My snowboarding trip calendar is filling up fast. Heading to Montana Jan 4-9 to get some action at Big Sky, and now planning to go to Japan the first week of February. Anybody been? Probably end up in the area of Rusutsu/Niseko.

Also want to get to Jackson Hole and Snowbird on separate trips by season's end.

Nice!! I have seen lots of video footage of Japan, but never been.

Big Sky is another place I have always wanted to go. Definitely some of the best terrain in North America, it is pretty under the radar. The people I know who have been there rave about it.

I ski Mammoth 2-3 weekends a month, which requires a ski lease. The ski lease costs us about 500 a month with utilities over a six month season, which leaves precious little for a travel budget. It is a shame with the Ikon pass having all these great locations I want to hit. I have an old friend from my ski bum days in Tahoe who lives in the bay but is in Tahoe almost every weekend, so I can stay with him and hit Squaw. My wife has a friend whose dad has a place in Utah, so I might be able to get in some Snowbird days, but I don't see a trip to Big Sky or Revelstoke or Jackson as likely. If only Mammoth was an hour away and I didn't need a ski lease! Actually, that would be a disaster, it is crowded enough as it is.

There was a couple who used to be in our ski lease before they bought their own place. They are both attorneys, but they have they, literally, hit Mammoth every weekend. They don't have kids, so they have money and freedom. Each winter they take a two week trip, driving up to the interior of British Columbia, hitting places on the way up and the way back. Some day I would love to do that. Both of them just retired in their early 50's, they still do some consulting on the side, mostly in the summer, but they have moved to Mammoth permanently. They said the two week trip will now last for a month. Needless to say they are pretty pumped on the Ikon pass.

I love the terrain at Mammoth but the mountain and lodging situation has made it kind of a pain in the ass. Something about it trying so hard to be a destination resort just really rubs me the wrong way. shrug

Kirkwood was fun today. Snow is still pretty packed but not too bad. Absolutely empty today. Walked on to every lift. Got my daughter situated with ski school in the morning with hopes being a year older would pay off a lot. After riding umpteen gullies (one of the things I love about Kirkwood) and snagging some sticky powder remnants in the trees for a couple hours, did a few runs with the wife as she is still learning, and then headed over to pick up my daughter.

Stocked! Everything clicked for her (night and day from Mammoth last year where her lesson was so bad she just trudged off the mountain before her lesson ended, never wanting to ski again) and she was up and riding lifts for first time. Had just enough time to get one last run in with her. I have been waiting for this moment a long time. Was awesome to have her ski with me for the first time. And she charged it! Pointed them straight, with exception of small speed checks, just fearlessly hauled ass to the bottom. jam_on

heading up to Mammoth tomorrow dawn patrol. Giving the new 164cm Korua Pencil a test run. LOTS of camber in it. but the setback is much more than my Flagship.

Thats a sexy bitch, eager for your ride report.

Ditto. Would love to try out any of the Koruas.

All hard pack today. All that camber was perfect. Its a medium weight board and stiff but not to stiff. Board is a rocket ship! Goes so fast. If you aint careful itll try to kill you. Not sure if its the factory wax but it just glides like crazy. Doesnt want to stop

Further update: holy fook! With softer snow the Korua Pencil is insane! Long carves but it can easily go rail to rail quickly. And soooo easy to kick out the tail. Any front side bank no matter the rut crud snow this thing smoothly powers thru with zero bumbs. Still need a powder day, but everything else this board owns and will destroy.

Got kind of skunked on the snow / conditions a couple weeks ago in Tahoe, but it was good to be in the mountains again. Misty and socked in clouds on the first day at Squaw, and then all that moisture mustve froze overnight because it was way too firm at Alpine Meadows the next day.

No driving hassles, and the wind was mild so overall a great trip with the family.

Mammoth has gotten pounded with what should be good base snow. My condo mates who are up there now have rubbed it in. I'm leaving Thursday around 5 am for a four day trip. Hopefully a bit more on the way on top of what should by now be a good base. I have not been up since around Dec 20. The base was decent back then, it should be much better now.

After 20+ years I finally bought a new pair of OR mitts. Holy fook, they are plush now! If I get another 20 years out of these I'll be 65.

Heading to Whistler next week with wifey and kiddo, Mon-Sat. If anyone is around hit me up. beer

Went a couple days after you. Killer weather, zero wind and snow was fine, but obviously not epic. Had a day at Homiewood and a day at Squaw. Forgot how fun it is to do turns on mountains.

My daughter probably thinks so too!

Lagged a bit posting this video up. Christmas Eve was absolute hell. Whiteout conditions and the snow was so wet, it literally stuck to your goggles. Thought I was the only one who was suffering but conferring with others, I definitely wasn't. I didn't even get onto the mountain until 2 that day because if it's going to be cruddy, might as well wait until there was some snow accumulation. Got some decent powder but was absolutely soaked by the end.

Christmas Day was really good at Kirkwood; reward for the day before. Foot+ of fresh powder from the day/night before. Was staying slopeside and was on the 5th chair up The Wall that morning. I made sure to be fast with my bindings at top and passed about 12-15 people so dawdling. 2 or 3 others traversed, leaving me with first tracks down the main face. Very sweet - I don't get that very often. Rode for a few more hours with most of my lines in unmolested powder until most of it was tracked out. Still needed a lot more base so powder stashes were relatively limited compared to later in season.

After that, went with my daughter and wife to the bunny hill. My wife spent most the time practicing on her own while my daughter and I took run after run after run - at least 15. So much fun seeing how stocked (and fearless) she was. Tried to convince her to practice turns but she just wanted to point them and go straight, and of course to lead the way. Which gave me many heart attacks since she apparently likes to buzz people close going fast. She also heckled the people falling under the lift. I taught her none of this so obviously this is hereditary. monkey

Absolutely ranks as one of the top days boarding I've ever had. Fresh powder in the morning and then watching my daughter completely stocked. First time she'd ever skied outside of a lesson and she progressed huge since last season as she was able to ride lifts this trip.

Finally made it up to Mammoth this past week. Met an old college friend who has a house in Tahoe. He said Mammoth conditions were far superior to squaw at the moment. This was prior to the most recent snows. It was good to get on the board again. Mostly stayed on piste. Headed up again on Friday, looking forward to better coverage.

On one of the runs, she almost skittered off that edge into the ski racks. Scared me almost as much as a previous run where she came within a couple feet of a 4 year old kid. I was already coming up with apologies in my head in anticipation of a collision. roflmao

Thanks. Can't do too many of those big trips as it's really pricey but looking at going to somewhere like Snow Valley a couple more times this season. Liftopia seems to have good deals. Any other suggestions where to get cheap tickets?

That's funny Kento my daughter ran into a fence (not bad) at Brian Head last year. It was her first day. We went to snow valley last friday and it was perfect for where the family is at skill wise. My daughter and I closed down the mountain after my wife and son quit a little early. She loves it.

I could take or leave the whole snowboard thing living in SD but whole fam is pretty into it so I guess I'm taking it lol.

Funny, I'm the one dragging my family into skiing/snowboarding. roflmao

Good to know about Snow Valley. I went there once 30 years ago and it was pretty wretched. Overhyped powder day which was actually ice due to rain at end of the storm. And donkeys galore. Similar to Swamis on a hype swell day, I'd suppose. But if it's decent conditions on a relatively empty day, would be a lot of fun to go up there with just my daughter. Especially if I can get away with rentals and tickets run less than $100 for the day. Far cry from a weekend at Mammoth for family of 4, which will run you deep into the thousands of dollars, enough for a month (months?) in Nicaragua. rolleyes roflmao

Oh trust me I would never go there on my own but I've been twice with the kids and have been pleasantly surprised. I mean what are you going to do at Bear/Summit with the kids that you can't do at SV?

I think the entire So Cal mountain scene is pretty ghetto so it doesn't make much difference to me.

My wife wants to do a June trip cause kids are free.

grew up skiing June from about age 10 to 18. had a blast there as a kid. my dad use to ride up the face lift with skies, boots (on one of those old school trees handles) and a cooler with our lunch. was sketchy when he'd get off the lift, but he'd do it. last year went back for the first time in nearly 30 years. not much has changed. was a good line at the face lift, but once on the mountain the crowd disappeared quickly. was just lapping J7 and J4 getting wide open runs. the ride down the face is still nerve racking

Cool, stu. My only experience was a pow day about ten years ago and they didn't have the whole mountain open so it was busy with wet snow. Definitely want to go back. Just texted my wife and she got all excited lol.

What's cool about the snow is it's something we can all do together which is pretty cool... well unless there's powder, then Mom is staying with the kids!

In exchange for not dragging her to the mountain, my wife pretty much gave me a standing hall pass for when there is a good powder day at one of the other local mountains. jam_on

For farting around with the kids on the bunny slopes, there is literally no difference between Snow Valley and Aspen. Well, except the price and SV is less douchey.

June is chill. Only been there once a long time ago but it was fun. Good family-style resort. Hopefully it hasn't become the wannabe-destination resort Mammoth has become (no, I am not a fan at all of how much they sold out).

This thread needs more eye candy. computer

Never fully realized why this shot ended up being one of my favorites over the last few years until I realized that this was March 2017, nearing the end of a historic season for snowfall totals in the West. We set the snowiest January on record that season and got snowed into Mammoth in the process.

By March, the base depth had to be at its peak, and you can tell by how awesome the mountains in the background look here. Wife dropping an empty black run on a perfect Spring day. Just for fun, I wont name the spot. heh heh.

Whats the word on those Jones + CC boards? Anyone like them?

Have the flagship and its great for bombing. Thinking about something with a bit more flex for carving the slower days on the groomers with a big group.

Also, whats the word on Union Atlas bindings? Those what I want?

Worried Falcor may be too sensitive. Want to soften up the ride a bit on the flagship. Day 3 chudder from last year is still on my mind.

the Falcor's are stiff! seen them at Evo, but they're light. even lighter are the Jones bindings that Now makes. Union Altas look to be a step up from the Forces which I have and worked plenty fine on my old flagship.

I guess in the same vein how are the burton cartel bindings?

My old Burton CO2 bindings have quite a few days on them but the tech on them still seems above the $300 tier. How important is the hammock high back that burton uses? Im used to that, for example but its on their high end stuff only.

I feel like my current bindings have to be toast but at the same time I have no idea how to tell if they are.

Have the Falcors on a Jones Aviator (first pic in this thread). I've always ridden stiff boots / bindings / boards, so it doesn't bother me... Plus I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing the hardware isn't the issue when I charge.

This works because my approach to Snowboarding is all Moto and no Skate. shrug

Bindings are funny. They can go so long, or break early.

If I see any signs of things coming apart... the fabric type materials shredding or peeling, or the hard / plastic parts cracking, it may be time to replace.

In general I'd say 100 days is a good amount of time to get out of any pair of boots / bindings, but I've seen hard goods fail at ~50 days, so ya never know.

Yeah Im right in that somewhere between 50-100days type use on the current set. Boots and board have been replaced while these chugged on. I dont remember them creaking this much in the past. But, the high backs never broke and I replaced the straps since one of the toe straps where I unclip for chairs was all chewed up.

May just pull the trigger on those Atlas bindings. Lots of 2018 stuff starting to get marked down already.

Heres what Im currently working with. https://thegoodride.com/snowboard-binding-reviews/burton-co2-review-and-buying-advice/

My cartels are awesome and have held up extremely well. Boot are soft and worn out though, I just don't want to make purchase since I don't ride that much.

Falcors are nice. Light and responsive.

Spent a couple days at Big Sky last week and had an awesome time. I actually crashed at Waterbaby and GD's place the first night and had a nice visit. They say hi!

Once my 4 coworkers landed, we headed off to the condo we rented about 15 minutes from the mountain. We had one hell of a tour guide with one of the guy's brother who works at the resort. Big Sky definitely needs more of a base, I put plenty of fresh scratches on my board but nothing serious. Overall it was an amazing mountain to explore.

Back in Pioneer for the evening and hitting up Kirkwood this weekend.

From the back door of the condo in MT.

Well, what's the report? I am on Blackcomb right now, been a fun week with the family up here. Supposed to dump overnight. Anyone else scoring?

Got some trips lined up. I think Ill just go falcors. Are union bindings actually made Italy? Starting to realize how over priced burton can be when going near the top of their lineup. Id rather be able to charge. Wont be too vicious on the days where you know your skunked?

Its too easy to just go to Utah, I have to say. Hoping I dont get skunked like last year. End of the day on the Flagship was rough in crap snow. Amazing board when on, however.

SMT - Spent 2 full days basically only doing 7th Heaven runs a couple years back. Near waist deep in some areas. Full send with no fear. Love that run when its on.

If you're bumping up your price range like that, you can't go wrong with Burton Cartels as an all arounder.

Yeah. Im in the $300 ballpark. Feels like Im buying a stubby short board. So many options with subtle differences, all are the same price.

at this point in the year, I'd say wait March-ish and buy on sale. if can make it a couple more months with what got. i'll probably be looking for end of season sales on Unions.

I got a deal on a pair of Burton Genesis X EST and they're a game changer. Perfect balance of stiffness and response while being comfy as all fvck. They're not cheap if you're paying full price but they're worth it if you can find them on sale. They make them in a re:flex model as well. The carbon suspension bed is like nothing else I've ever ridden. Cush as hell but responsive. Totally confidence inspiring. Just makes you wanna point the board downhill and lean forward and you can just trust them.

Tsenn, I ski more than I board. Actually sold both my snowboards a few years ago. I got some Blizzard Gunsmoke skis with Look pivot bindings and they do everything I need.

Sd101, we were on 7th Heaven two days ago, it was the only place we found any lift lines. And the lift was running on diesel backup power at 75% capacity. So we didn't stay long, but I got it good a while back.

That sucks. RIP.

Both of them were dug out but had serious injuries.

Taos is a rare bird. Along with Alta in Utah.

The two ski resorts that still restrict access to snowboarders.

False. I snowboarded Taos.

Its mostly a skiers place tho. Not easy to get into the good stuff without large traverses. I dont remember which is K3 but Kachina is pretty accessible. Its just a chair to the top but then you cross the ridge and drop in where you feel like it.

Youre correct about Alta, however. Snowbird is good enough for me tho.

and just took them out (10 and 8) and they loved it! I went backwards almost all day with a huge smile.
Last weekend I went back to Tahoe with my high school buddies and within 2 runs was charging diamonds with
moguls and flying down the groomers with the boys like nothing had changed...except the burning quads after 6 hours. Think Im hooked again.

Any tips from the pros on how to tune/hot wax a board?

I was gifted an iron, set of brushes, scraper, wax recently and figured it was time to give it a try.

Just did 2 on Saturday night. Make sure its not rub on wax, and a dedicated wax iron (without the typical holes of a clothing iron) is what you want to use.

Don't put too many drops on the very tip / tail as excess wax will spread to those areas when you melt it all, and those parts of the base down take much of a beating. The outer 2-3 inches of the base along the entire effective edge takes the most beating and will be the first areas to show wear and look white / hazy, so drop the most wax there with some extra spots over the middle areas. Put drops all over the base first, and then go back and liquefy them all.

At that point you should have an even coat of wax over the entire base with no more dops / spots showing. Do your final passes (usually takes 3 depending on the width of the iron) slowly from tip to tail. Let it cool, and then scrape it all off. You'd be surprised how much wax you can keep getting off a board when you think you are close to done. Use different sides of the scraper (I have only had plastic ones) as they get dull and/or dont always strip the wax evenly. This step is a phucking mess so put the nose of the board resting on a rolled up towel on my work bench, and the tail of the board resting on a city trash can / recycle bin. You should always scrape from nose to tail and most of the wax shavings will go into the city bin, but have a ShopVac ready to clean up the rest that goes on the floor.

Remember that the wax is only to fill the pores or "structure" of the base. Dont leave anything significant behind or it will pick up dirt and / or get grabby at times. Ive heard that for dry powder a little bit of wax left behind on the base is good, but if the snow is slightly (or very) wet, wax left behind on a base will seal or adhere to the ligquid in the snow and grab. For most snow conditions you need to strip all the wax you can off so that the structure (texture) of the base is exposed as that texture breaks the bond with the liquid / snow.

If that isn't detailed enough there are plenty of online videos on it.

Ive both done it myself as well as paid to have it done. After years of self tunes I decided I cant get anywhere as good as a decent shop wax and structure job.

If you piece it together on the menu it shouldnt run you much. Its going for the packages and grinding your base that add up the cost.

Maybe I just got lazy.

easy. make sure got covering for the floor and a good solid surface to put the board on, like saw horses. for waxing hold the iron at an angle when applying the wax to it. let the wax drip down one edge. i'm pretty generous with apply wax. i apply wax to 1/2 the board at time working nose to tail direction. once the wax is on lightly press the iron to the board as to spread melt it out. move the iron relatively fast, not keeping it on one spot of the board too long. wax should be semi-liquid when spreading out. don't have to wax up the nose or tail beyond the contact points of the board. after applying the wax let it cool down for about 15 minutes. Then scrap it off. good pressure but don't push down too hard. like scrapping wax off a surf board. after scrapping the surface of the board should be smooth. Next step is king of buffing it. I use a kitchen scotch paid. lightly rub that over the whole board. my test is should be able to push the scotch pad down the board and it slides by itself. clean up the work area and you're down. unless you want to tune the edges.

Felt up some bindings today. I think I like the Malavita over the Cartel but only for the high back and the ratchet. Reviews say Malvita are stiffer for re:flex but burton is saying the other way around.

As a former ski tech, I'm cringing that no one has mentioned properly cleaning the bases with a good brush and wax remover.

Epic day in our backyard yesterday. I snapped this shot of my 14 year old and Mt. Bachelor featured it in their social media (he's on their team):

For whatever it's worth, my son and I, many of our friends and lots of the local pros around here all ride Malavitas. They are pretty similar to Cartels but with a slightly stiffer highback which helps with response and slightly better ratchets etc. My last bindings before the Malavits were some CO2's that lasted forever and when I finally switched a couple years ago I really liked the way the Malavita's felt.

Mammoth was really fun this weekend. Despite the warm temps the top stayed wintery. The best I found was the skier's right part of Climax, under the Top of The World.

Was there as well. No real powder left, but the trees were still doable. Overall, conditions were great. Grippy snow and great weather.

Finally dropped in at the very peak of Daves Run. Steeper than it looks in the photo, but Ive seen a meaner cornice on it before. In the past I'd slide down a ways riders right before cutting into the middle.

There are generally two loosely defined chutes going down Daves (split by a rock exposure about 2/3 of the way down) and I was able to do the one on riders left which was less chewed up and very fun for turns. You can see what I'm describing in the photo.

It's been a long time since I've been to Mammoth. We had season passes and went a couple weekends a month for years back in the early 00's. I miss it for sure. Looks like you had a great day up there! There's a very slight chance we might come down in a couple weeks so my kids can train and compete in the superpipe but it's looking like that plan might be scrapped in favor of a Colorado training trip for the older kid. I'd love to get Mammoth on a pow day again but at this point it's rarely about me anymore. shrug

And I'm stuck at work. banghead

Tomorrow or Wed when the top pops at Mammoth is gonna be all-time. Trying to get up this coming weekend but it seems like the price of accommodations has skyrocketed this season. Can't seem to find anything for less than $300/night anymore. Which isn't terrible when you're going up with the boys and splitting it 4 ways. But when I want to go up with my GF that becomes a really expensive weekend. I need an RV like Q.

Yep.

Mammoth can get f*cked for going from a SoCal "local" mountain to a destination resort like Deer Valley or Aspen. Totally different vibe than 25 years ago and extremely overcrowded/overpriced. I'm shocked Chair 22 hasn't turned into a high speed 6-seater with an espresso machine.

Waiting for a particular local mountain to get a few more feet of snow so they can open. At drastically lower prices, powder that stays untracked for more than 45 minutes, and 1/100th the number of people. hat

But when I want to go up with my GF that becomes a really expensive weekend.

At drastically lower prices, powder that stays untracked for more than 45 minutes, and 1/100th the number of people. hat

PM me if you're ever interested in making a surgical strike to this mountain. If we're thinking about the same place they just got 21" of new snow and counting and they're currently on weather hold due to high winds.

Give it some time for Chair 22 to have espresso machines on it. The ikon pass is royally fvcking things up. I hear the mountain is dead on blackout days and the weekends before and after them are swamped. They're going to have to adjust. My friends and I are talking about skipping mammoth all together next season and just planning a couple 2 and 3 day cat trips instead. It could be cost neutral if we do it right.

heading up this weekend. also might do a strike mission to Niseko next weekend since it's on the Ikon pass and my brother will be out there. I don't think it's the Ikon pass royalty fooking things up. I'd say it's more the price of regular tickets. $170-ish per day? HOLY fook. They're pricing out even more so now non-passholders. What I've noticed is a lot more families hanging around the lodges not skiing/snowboarding in regular clothes waiting for maybe one person in their group to come off the mountain.

impulse purchased and ordered a set of Union Atlas. they better get here ASAP like backcountry claimed so I can use them this weekend.

Will do. Might be different mountain than you're thinking of but is far and away best in SoCal but more for backcountry access. I may have said too much already. computer

The pricing is very demoralizing. Easily costs well into the thousands of dollars for a family of 4 to go for a weekend and that is absurd IMO. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was how piss-poor their children's ski school was and how amazingly disorganized their staff is, never mind the hour+ lit lines. Maybe if they focused purely on the mountain and direct services instead of all the vapid periphery (microcosm of America), things wouldn't have gotten as out of control. Nothing they have done is an improvement in my opinion (well, aside from sidestepping up that hill to get on to Chair 1). While I am not a fan of Vail buying out Kirkwood, at least they have their shit together.

Probably would be cost-neutral. Hell, a 3 month trip to Central America would probably be cost-neutral compared to a couple holiday weekends at Mammoth. crazy2

I noticed that too - the majority of people traveling up there are not there to ski or snowboard. Which further clogs up the lodging and restaurants.

Yep, they have priced me out. I bought the pass that one year in light of the lift tickets but still was not worth it whatsoever when combined with lodging, daycare, kids rentals (which can take an hour+ on their own due to gross incompetence and understaffing), food, etc. Used to be a family resort and it isn't anymore. Been going there a long time and it makes me a bit bitter how badly they've sold out. They turned into Aspen.

Going forward, it will be day trips to local mountains and occasional forays to Utah, which is much cheaper.

If my family didn't have a place up there, I'd be singing the same tune. I'm locked in to Mammoth unless/until the family spot disappears.

On a related note, I need a new jacket, and I'm waffling between a hardshell or soft shell. Pretty much only used at Mammoth, for whatever that's worth. Anyone want to throw out some suggestions?

Patagonia Powder Bowl non-insulated. Goretex and not too heavy. I've used it on both hot and cold days. got mine on sale two seasons ago. love it. on a cold day I wear a Nano air puff and am totally fine. high collar to block the wind from your face. hood will go over a helmet. a spring type of day just long sleeve undershirt + t-shirt and not overheating too much.

Yeah, that jacket is up there on the list. I run hot and sweaty, so I usually have to layer well and vent pretty heavily to dump heat.

I've always been a fan of Burton's AK line. Can be a bit pricy, along the same lines as Patagucci. You can poach sales for last season's models 30-40% off and they comes with a lifetime warranty. I have the AK Hover jacket and love it. Keeps me dry and is nice and light. Pair it up with a fleece or a nano air vest or just a t-shirt depending on weather and it keeps me covered. IMHO Gore-tex is a must. There's nothing better than when your gear works for you. You're warm and dry but not overheating and your goggles aren't fogged up. I'd pay a premium for that any day.

That said, with all the pricey gore-tex gear I got curious seeing all the patrolman and lifties using the cheap kinco gloves and decided to give them a try. Picked up a pair of mittens and some snow seal on Amazon for around $20 and haven't looked back. No more $100 gloves for me. These things simply work. And like a baseball mitt seem to get better over time.

Mammoth has gotten crushed with this storm. Be safe anyone who is up there. I will be heading up Friday at 4 am along with the rest of socal.

As far as Mammoth as a destination resort, it has frustrated me too. I went to UCSB, where I was on the ski team. We had a house that we rented every year, so you could join the team and go up 2-3 weekends a month an spend vacations there. Usually there would be 20 people crashed in sleeping bags, but it was college, so no big deal. I first skied Mammoth in January of 1994, and I loved it. I grew up in the east skiing bumps, and the places out west I had skied were Vail, Sun Valley, Park CIty, Squaw and Aspen. I had also been to Copper and Abasin on the all-Cal ski trip. The only one of those places I liked better than Mammoth was Squaw, Mammoth is steeper than any of those places except MAYBE Abasin, and Abasin is not nearly as big as Mammoth. I don't think socal people realize how great this mountain is, it is truly one of the best in the country. But as a destination resort, I don't think it really makes sense for a family from, say, Chicago. If you like steep terrain, Mammoth is awesome, much better than Vail. But for a family of intermediate to advanced intermediate skiers/boarders, what does Mammoth have that Vail does not? Those people are not dropping cliffs or skiing Philippe's any time soon. The noids and hangman's are also probably a bit steep for them, so why would they fly into Mammoth, a sketchy flight, when they could more easily go into Park City, Vail or Aspen? I don't think the village will ever work the way they think it will, from what I have heard they have never really courted the local community very well. I know the powers that be WANT to make Mammoth a destination resort, like Vail, but I don't think it will really work. My dad flew in there a couple of years ago, and he said it was the worst flight of his life. Flights get canceled in and out of that airport all the time. If I was Mammoth I would never have spent all that money trying to compete with Vail/Aspen. You have a great mountain, and a built-in customer base that can drive up for weekends. Tahoe is similar, but Reno is a much easier place to fly into. Also, Tahoe has lots of resorts, Mammoth only has Mammoth and June, which means that there is nowhere for the crowds to spread to. I don't think that in the long term things with the village will work out well. I would expect to see more people from Ikon pass places, Denver people who regularly ski Winter Park and folks from Seattle who regularly ski Crystal for instance. You will also get more people from Tahoe and Reno coming. Among serious skiers/boarders, Mammoth has always been known as one of the best mountains in the country, but I don't think they are every going to get the intermediate/midwest vacation crowd. That is who they are going for, and I don't know if it will work. I hope it does not, Mammoth is crowded enough. I'm just really glad that the yellow line goes right by our condo, Mammoth had a parking problem back in 1994, now it is much worse.

The ski industry is eventually going to have a problem. My parents skied a little bit, but they were not all that serious. Growing up in the mid-hudson valley I had places like Belleayre that were 1.5 hours away and cost 20 dollars for a lift ticket. I started when I was 9, and got pretty into, but people could be casual skiers and ski 5 days a year and it was not absurdly expensive. It actually costs far less to be a serious skier these days, for 900 bucks your tickets are essentially covered, back when I lived in Tahoe, I left in 04, a season pass at Squaw was 1600. But it has become extremely expensive to be someone who skis a few days a year. A family of four that wants to do a three day weekend at Mammoth you are talking about AT LEAST 600 a day on lift tickets. Then you have to pay for food. Then lodging. You might also have to rent gear. If the industry is not careful, it will get to the point where the ONLY people who can ski casually are those who are lower upper class and above. You will price out even the upper middle class. Serious skiers will still be able to afford it, because they will get Ikon/Epic passes, but the casual skier will disappear, unless they are very wealthy. My parents were of reasonable means, but if skiing was as expensive then (present valuing what it costs now and going back to the mid-80's) as it is now I might never have gotten into it. This COULD actually be a good thing for mom and pop places. They have the opportunity to charge less for a day ticket, and possibly get those casual skiers.

Stocked. Going to Sugar Bowl this weekend. Dumping up there, as they've gotten 6'+ the past week, with 2'+ forecasted this weekend. Hope the roads stay open.

I have mammoth booked for this weekend with my GF. Motel Sex 6 for us. dancing I'll be up early for surgical strikes and will hope to be off the mountain and hanging with her late in the day since I'll be riding solo. Maybe get into some cross country with her since thats more her speed. Looks like more snow headed their way on sat and sun and things seem to be setting up for some Atmospheric River action. jam_on

Yeah even when people suggest flying to Mammoth from LA I have a hard time considering that. When you factor the amount of time it takes to get to LAX, check luggage, navigate security, etc only for a flight that is a high risk of being cancelled when there is weather, and you want weather it makes no sense. Once I'm getting on a plane I'd rather fly to Utah or Whistler. Both are doable for a weekend or long weekend and these days cost around the same. I would never fly to mammoth.

Great writeup, dl4060.

I fully agree with a lot of what you said there. I used to go to Mammoth with family almost every weekend in late 80s/early 90s and it was really manageable. That was when the nightlife in town consisted of Grumpy's/Whiskey Creek and renting movies on VHS to bring back to hotel/condo. You could also drive up on a Friday and get a room no problem - that lasted until the early 2000s, I would say. However, I would say starting around 1996, I would skip Mammoth altogether, stay in South Lake Tahoe and go to Kirkwood. Even though it was a longer drive, just everything about it was better. Cheap lodging in town and the casinos (Harvey's in particular) would usually bankroll my trip. Couple exceptions where I heavily bankrolled them. roflmao Was up there every weekend, would play Pai Gow til 2 (or 5) in the morning, get to the mountain at 9:30/10 (unless it was a powder day), buy a lift ticket off an early riser in the parking lot for $10 (or trade the liftie on The Wall a nug to ride that lift all day, no questions asked), barbecue some burgers/hot dogs in the parking lot for lunch, board the rest of the day, sell the previously scalped lift ticket for $15 to someone rolling up around 2:30 or 3, rinse, repeat. Would get 30 to 40 days a year in. I recently questioned why I didn't buy a season pass back then but then but I still got a better deal the way I did it, especially once I started making friends with a lot of the people who worked there and rarely paid for anything after that.

Those were the days. Before responsibilities.

Now, with family of my own, it's a lot tougher (especially on single-income). I am not getting up there enough to justify a season pass, whether single or multi-mountain. It's a lot to mobilize. My wife is only semi-into it and my son isn't quite ready for the slopes. At 4, he's physically able but his speech and language are a bit behind so likely needs another year. I think it really clicks anyways around 5 or 6. My daughter is fired up about skiing so that is definitely cool and I want to keep her going with it.

So, always looking for options for deals. And it's a shame that Mammoth is out of reach financially. I wouldn't be so bitter towards that mountain if I didn't love it so much. Even in the Kirkwood-dominant days, I'd still get a handful of days there every season. End of an era, I suppose.

Gonna miss this storm up there but hoping to grab something locally here soon. If Baldy is holding mid-week once they have enough base, cough cough might be a sick day coming. hat

heading up Thursday after work. Looks like another smaller storm Friday night, lingering into Saturday, and more on Sunday. Whole mountain was shut down today, except 8,

In the winter of 10/11, an epic one, I was skiing laps at Baldy one weekend. On the lift I met a guy who said that he has things set up so that he flies to Utah every other weekend for a 3-day weekend. He was an attorney in, probably, his early50's, and he told me that for years he did the Mammoth thing too, but then he got sick of the drive. I mentioned that it would cost a lot to do all that flying, he said yes, but if you book early tickets are usally not THAT bad. He said his wife goes up about half the time, so usually he just has to buy one ticket. He also pointed out that his condo in Salt Lake was 120k, when a similar one in Mammoth would be 400k.

One of my old ski lease mates had a plane for a little while. He would ask me if I wanted to fly up, and I always declined, usually making up an excuse about timing. I'm not a fan of small planes, I also would not want to fly into an airport like Mammoth with a pilot who is not a pro. My buddy is a smart and sensible guy, he is the type of person I would fly in that type of plane with if I had to, but that is one sketchy airport. Like I said though, I really don't like small planes. Even so, even if little planes did not bother me I don't think I would want to fly in one going to Mammoth.

I actually might jump on this. I'm going to call to make sure the pass is good for the rest of this year as well as next, but that appears to be what it says. The base should be pretty well set up at Baldy for the rest of the year.

I'm driving up to Mammoth Saturday from San Diego with the GF who doesn't ski/board, she will probably just chill in the village all weekend while I ride. If anybody's down for linking up lemme know. Also if anybody knows of any good options for lodging reach out. Everything is pretty much booked solid Saturday night so looking for something as of now.

got my Union Altas bindings in the mail yesterday. mounted they feel pretty damn fooking' solid. slightly lighter then the Union Forces. The plastic ankle straps feel lot more secure. The mesh style top caps fit stretch over the toe of the boot better than the straps on the Forces. Ride report to come after this weekend.

Wednesday was one for the books! Pulled the trigger on Tues morning and booked a room at the Westin on points (So stocked the Marriott bought Starwood!!). Woke to cold blue skies, light wind and small crowds. Great conditions all day. Demo'd a Never Summer Big Gun 165 and it just flew through everything. Had so much fun on it, wifey insisted I buy it when I went to return it on Friday.
Great trip!!
Stocked for you all that are up there now as it must be epic.

Got the malavitas. Felt true to their review in the taste I got this weekend. Happy customer.

Cant say the new bling straps were night and day better but I appreciated the shock absorbsion and canted footbed. No cramps at the end of the day. Highback hammock is pretty cool feeling.

On sale on evo and no tax/shipping. Stocked for some upcoming trips later this month.

Just got back from mammoth. Total foolking shit show on Saturday. Only the lower mountain opened due to weather holds. Managed to score some fresh tracks despite the zoo. Last night delivered the goods and the previous days circus and weather seemed to scare off the crowds. Highest I made it on the mountain due to weather holds was traversing to lower Lincoln off of 16. Got it 3rd chair. Was a short run but the snow quality was as good as Ive seen it at mammoth and well over thigh deep in spots. Cant complain. Those lucky enough to stick around another day are going to score big time tomorrow. 80% of the mountain is untracked. Its gonna be all time.

can attest to the shitshow saturday. only took 3 runs before calling it. went up Rollercoaster and the visibility looking down toward 5 was near white out. new that side wasn't going open until later afternoon and was tired of standing in line for a hour. was pretty damn cold too. Negative 5 degrees on the drive up Thursday night. Didn't ride yesterday as the wind looked even worse where we stayed up near WH2. Took 2 hrs to drive to Bishop (35-ish miles).

one day review of the Union Altas....great binding! get them if you're considering them

Wonder if MM is going to tie or beat the 600+ mark set 2 seasons ago?
Another major dump on the way.
Got another trip coming up first week of March, can't wait.

Still a long way to go. It's possible but I wouldn't bet on it. This last storm dumped a lot but the ratio was high, in sheer water content 2yrs ago was insane.

they'll need March to be a big month too. That record year 2016, February was like this year. had a major dumb before President's day. then there was a major storm in March too. This week's storm I haven't seen the snow there that light in a LONG time. weather was cold to get the new snow light and not sierra cement.

Was up at Mammoth last week Wed-Fri. Stayed in the village with a group from work, annual trip that we have gotten skunked on it the past, but scored this year. Low crowds, deep snow, bluebird skies. Best snow in years for me. Hope everyone has a great winter.

We made the national news!! ...well, not really, but Squaw Valley did with 50" of accumulation in 24-hours. Against our better judgement, we went for it this weekend despite an official red status winter storm warning, and highway closures imminent. This may have been the trip that broke me on choosing to get out there and soldier through these types of conditions (sorry, no pics of us sliding completely sideways downhill while in 4wd...lol). I can see why many older / wiser snow lovers simply avoid such conditions. Pure luck we made our Sunday evening flight home. Highway 80 didn't open until ~3;45pm Sunday and it was still snowing on the way down the hill.

Man I feel bad for those who didn't stick around for Mondays Bluebird cause it truly was a special day! Entire mountain opened up and nothing but light fluffy powder, blue skies, light winds and the icing on the cake was extremely light crowds. Many Mammoth locals and lift operators claiming it day of the year. My legs are still sore 2 days later. Needless to say I was super stocked to experience such a magical day!

A few pics I snapped throughout the day.

I was lucky enough to be around Monday. I had fun on Saturday, despite the zoo. I waited in line and got a very fresh line down avi 2 on 22, then waited in line for 25 and got a great line there too. After that they shut down 22 and 25. Sunday I lapped roller coaster, usually cutting under Lincoln peak for a fresh line. People were waiting for Canyon express to open instead of using Rollercoaster which amazed me. It was VERY deep and light, some of the best snow I have ever seen at Mammoth. Monday...WOW!!! I left Tahoe in 2004 for weekend warrior status at Mammoth, I get 30-40 days a year, mostly at Mammoth, so I have had lots of Mammoth powder days...But Monday just might have been the best Mammoth top powder day I have ever had. I started out with two laps on chair 5. I assumed 5 would be wind affected, but it really was not. Super deep and light, absolutely awesome. Then I went and waited in line for 23. I assumed 23 would be wind affected, it usually is, but Monday it was pretty much not affected by the wind, at least where I went. You just never get blower powder on the top at Mammoth, it usually slides if it is too light, but despite 4.5 FEET of light fresh, the Paraniods did not slide at all, which does not even seem possible. My first line was in Paranoid 1, and I crossed maybe one track. It was almost waist deep, and VERY light, maybe the best line I have EVER had in the noids. I went back for another round and it was still spectacular, some tracks but still VERY deep and light. I went back again and did a P4 into Philppe's, which was awesome. On the chair ride up for my first lap I saw a guy come rocketing out of Kiwi Flat, launching the cliff instead of wiggling through the choke. After Philippe's I skied a couple of Hangman's laps, which were cut up but beautiful. Hangman's is wide enough that hopefully the usual traverse rut from the skier's right won't develop, you can really ski the choke smoothly. I took a quick break, then took the gondola up and went out to the Dragon's Back for a long line all the way back to Eagle. I took the bus back to the condo, shoveled my car out and drove back home on a high. I'm not positive that was my best day ever at Mammoth, but I don't know if I have ever seen the top that deep, that light, and that stable. I'm still buzzing a few days later. I don't think I will go back up this weekend, but you never know. I'm really glad I was able to stay Monday. I won't ever forget that day. Waist deep, blower hero snow off the top of Mammoth with perfect stability. That just does not happen.

Be VERY careful driving around town. The snow banks are huge and people have to inch out to see if they can pull out. I would encourage everyone to use the shuttle bus system if possible. Mammoth Snowman's weather guy is predicting 60-83 inches at Main Lodge by Monday, it will be more up top. Have fun and stay safe for all who go.

I should add that even when I left on Monday afternoon Main Street was still only one lane in each direction. The snow banks are nuts.

That is sick!

The one thing I wish I would have done would have been to hike Hemlock. Looks like Gabe got at least one great line down Hemlock.

I broke trail on Hemlock once after a substantial (5'+) dump. It was closer to swimming breaststroke uphill than hiking. Well worth it in the end but that hike took 45 minutes. drowning That was a prime day though. Got in massive trouble for ditching my family and friends completely (prior to cell phones) showing up at the condo at 5. They all thought I was dead. roflmao

Hemlock is one of my favorite runs at Mammoth. Especially on windy spring days when your tracks get filled in every half hour or so. My record still stands at hiking it 13 times in one day. smile2

was like that Thursday night when I drove up. person we stayed with who has a house in Mammoth was saying the city hasn't made a dump run yet taking all snow and off loading it down the hill. guess they're waiting for all the storms to clear as it costs the city some decent $'s to dump the snow out of town. crazy they're letting the snow banks eat up a lane of traffic on both sides the street.

I did my ski bum years in Squaw, and the rule on pow days for hiking was that you wanted to be maybe 10th up a line like Granite Peak. If you are the one breaking trail you will be exhausted and get to watch the people following you get the goods.

13 times!!! That's nuts!! Way to earn it.

Snow dump runs started yesterday morning as I was leaving town. There must have been 15 dump trucks full of snow heading out of town towards the 395. Cal-Trans brought in a convoy of plows and heavy equipment at Mammoth Lakes request to clear as much snow as possible before the next atmospheric river returns today. I saw crews up and down every street throughout town digging out fire hydrants and clearing snow off roofs. Mammoth is on the verge of a snow emergency and this next storm is forecasting extremely heavy wet snow (Sierra cement) due to the warmer air mass associated with the storm. A few more feet will most likely put them over the top and possibly cripple the town but crews were hard at work yesterday preparing for it.

In hindsight, it wasn't a great idea. Total magic day. I somehow got first tracks on everything as lifts progressively opened up.

With the 13 laps up Hemlock, I was practically running up there in 5-7 minutes each time. roflmao

Was in Japan all last week. Saturday Feb 2nd through Friday the 8th, seven days in a row, all powder days. The best quality snow I've ever experienced in my life. My coworker and I learned the stashes at Rusutsu pretty well, and could find empty lines even at the end of the day. It's as if angels cried and their frozen tears filled the nooks and crannies of the mountain. Truly beautiful. Did a snow cat tour at Iwanai. fooking epic.

After flying home all day on Saturday, I drove up to the cabin in Pioneer on Sunday evening. Then drove all the way around the long way down to Jackson, up 49 to Placerville, up 50 to Myers, then down Carson Pass to make it to Kirkwood on Monday. Damn you Carson Spur. But the reward was an uncrowded day and a freshly opened backside which hadn't been open for a few days. Bluebird. Fresh lines. I'm exhausted. Never put more than 3 day in a row on the mountain before. Now I have 7 in a row and 8 in 10 days.

Next trip - Jackson Hole Feb 28-March 3.

Holy smokes, so the southern portion of highway 88 was closed forcing you to drive that huge loop to hit 89 to the northern part of 88!?

Yep. So instead of a 45-60 minute drive from Pioneer it took about 3 hours. Worth it!

Carson Spur is only a mile South from Kirkwood but closes due to avalanche danger quite a bit. Always a gamble during a big storm if it's going to open or not. On Sunday, you couldn't get to Kirkwood at all, as Carson Pass was closed from South Lake. So everybody that was trapped at Kirkwood got the freshest of fresh snow all to themselves.

Mammoth whole mountain is on weather hold today. 31 degrees right now. Pretty warm for a snow storm. Major avalanche risk. I wonder if it's one of those that the slide could happen like a week later shrug

Duffy is there and got out yesterday morning before it started raining and he called it in. He knew it was gonna be mostly shut down the next couple days but he's riding it out in the Village and trying to get the goods on the lower mountain when they can.

I'm much, much worse on a snowboard than a surfboard, so fresh untracked powder is kind of a waste on me, but I just got back from repeatedly falling down an empty, deep powder mountain in Utah yesterday. A lot of fun, and much better quality snow than the last time I went up to Tahoe.

Any of you guys who go to Mammoth have a recommended shop for demo snowboard rentals? I can't believe the mountain wants over $100 a day, that's more than I spent in Jackson Hole.

No idea the cost for a demo but wave rave is a solid shop with a solid selection of boards. You can demo Gentemstiicks there.

Saw a pic from Squaw Valley last week. My brother and I have a friend with a condo down in the Village. Right next to the tram station.

Chairlifts buried up to only the tops of the towers are exposed. Chairs are buried underneath the snowpack.

Global Warming. We are s blemish.

Wow, I remember demoing premium board from Canyon lodge back in 2010 and it was $60 if I remember correct. I used my own bindings and they let me take it out the last 2 hours of the first day and keep it the entire 2nd day. Might be worth asking about that to max your demo time.

As much as I hate the name, Wave Rave in Mammoth seems to stock some high end stuff (checked out a Carbon Flagship there) but not sure if they demo.
