Q: Secret aspiration?

Plenty used gear floating around here now. First and second gen stuff for relatively cheap.

Not a bad deal for all this Naish gear. The stripped alan screw on the 70 cm mast to tuttle mount adapter might be an issue though.

It's hard to get excited about used gear when Gongfoil's are so cheap new.

Can someone give me a reason to not buy a gongfoil?

https://gongsupshop.com/epages/box1707.m...FOILALLSURFCPTL

400 shipped to my door basically. Brand new foil. The large wing is supposed to be 1643cm2 so slightly bigger than a gofoil iwa I think. Whats the catch here?

Side note. I think my naish rear stabilizer is about to break. It wobbles with very little pressure. Thats my reason for buying a new foil.

A buddy has got the foil itch and I am attempting to advise him. Coming up with the same conclusion: those gong foils are crazy cheap. Works out to same or cheaper than Alibaba, but for a recognized brand. (and maybe mentioned somewhere already, but take 20% off the website prices for non EU orders, no VAT)

Only hesitation is the scarcity of reviews and first-hand reports. This thread has good info, but have to be cautious of hype factor: https://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/Foiling/The-Gong-Allvator-SUP-Surf-foil?page=1

But all in all, I am confident these will work great and if I hadn't just bucked up for a Slingshot Infinity wing (which I do love), I'd probably buy one of these instead. Cheaper than my new wing with all the rest of the kit thrown in free. Only question mark is the ongoing cost of spare parts -- as I really appreciate Slingshot's dedication to interchangeable bits at reasonable prices.

I summarized Gong specs for my friend:
Large: 80cm span, 1643cm2 projected, 1926cm2 developed (latter I think is main comparative measure used)
XL: 90/1844/2137
XXL: 100/2175/2487

I think the first is the reference number from the mackite thread where they list the brands they sell.

Naish large Im currently riding is 1236

Gofoil iwa is 1548

The link to that chart is probably on page one.

My mate has just ordered Gong M, L, XL and a couple of mast options. Hasnt received yet but yeah...cheap and looks good. Ill have a go on it and post a review.

Sozzle from the design forum just got a Gong setup too.

Cost of spare parts looks great with the Gong.

Thanks for the heads up. Just picked this up so that I can steal parts from grendel.

Now I can see how your fuse bent. Slingshot's tail wing attachment and hardware setup are way more robust. Too bad nobody's using their stuff over on this coast.

Nice ghostshaper. Want to sell me one of the rear stabilizers for super cheap? 😀

How would I go about reinforcing the vertical bit in the rear stab? Is it like fixing a glass on fin? Or not worth the effort?

Edit: whoops I thought that guy had two rear stab's. Oh well.

Another edit: Think I could do downwinder's on this? Takuma concept 7'8". $350. Price seems good. Man foiling is expensive even with dirt cheap gear.

yea there is starting to get a lot of options out there. Too many options for me and i start to get analysis paralysis. Was talking to Dave Daum from Kings and he was showing me his angled foil and explaining the concept behind it...crazy.

For now, my GF Iwa is going to have to do until i get much better.

Gong wrote me back. Here's some more info on their foils.

-----------------------

Our size M is the most similar to the L size of Naish, our span is a bit larger 70 cm vs 66 cm. So it has a little more stability and lift at lower speed. Our L size is more similar to the GoFoil IWA 170. It is a really maneuverable kind of foil, great in waves and also easy to pump for your weight and experience.

The XXLarge size is 100 cm span which it is similar to the GoFoil Maliko 280 and it is great for downwind or flat water pumping.

The delivery to you address in California it will be 111 for the Foil Complete L and 117 for the Foil Complete L + XXL Wing.

For the delivery to US we cannot precisely estimate the delay but it can take from 7 to 12/15 days.

----------------------------

So take 20% off the listed price on the website, then add in the shipping cost to CA. Convert to US and that's the current price for a gong setup. I estimate it at $486.87 for the allavator 65 with L wing. The one problem is the size L is out of stock until the 20th of February. XL and XXL wings out of stock until 25th of March.

HDip: thanks for taking the time to post this intel. Great timing, as my buddy seeking foil is asking these same questions, shipping time/cost, which wings for what, etc. I am advising him that if he just goes for a single wing, the L sounds like the best all-rounder. But if I was him, for the extra $200 or so, I'd get a M / XL combo ... the small wing / bigger wing combo covers off small waves and bigger faster waves. Plus he can use the M with his kite. The XXL would be fun too, but will probably get towards too much lift for anything other than really tiny waves. But at roughly $200 each, heck, buy 'em all ... I paid $500US for a single wing (Slingshot 84), can get a 3 wing quiver for same price, that's nutbar.

Keoki: me too, I get overwhelmed with availability, so I find the only way to cope is to just pick 1 or 2 brands and focus on their product lines. re: getting better ... you may find that investing in other wings, larger or smaller, may help you get better faster! I don't know IWA well, I get the sense it's a nice all rounder though. Which means a bigger wing will get you up so fast and easy, a smaller wing will lock in and go so fast. Spending the $$$ will solve all your problems and feel soooo good. haha, this sport is terrible! :-)

i have the medium gong foil as clammy stated a few posts back, i haven't used it yet as i'm just about to shape a board for it to go on.

i'm 155lbs so the medium should work for me, i am slightly concerned with the uk waves being so slow with the smaller 'medium' foil so i've ordered the large too.

although i don't have any experience with any other foils to gauge against but it seems to be well made,

i wouldn't have a chance at foiling other wise so i'm stocked that gong have given the average guy a way in.

keep all the good info on boards and stuff coming fellas cheers

also, thanks clamsmasha for helping me get on this, super grateful for your help bowdown
