IDK man my wife has been making me get it since we've had kids - 3 years now.

I think I usually get some knock me down illness each year shot or no shot.

I'm convinced the shot wears me down and I dont fell myself for a couple weeks after

I just read about a 39yo guy who had his life ruined by the flu.

no good answer.

I got the flu for the first time ever last winter. Sucked, woke up with fever and cold shakes. When I walked it felt like my knees were going to break. Was pretty much okay after two days.
My wife and youngest daughter both got shots. Myself and oldest daughter did not.
We all caught it.
The flu shot made my little one (1.5 yr at the time) sick.
I haven't had a shot since i got out of cg and I had no choice.
Never got them growing up.
I don't know if we're getting shots this year other then my wife who has to for her job.

I don't remember exactly, triggered some other things that were dormant and he has to learn to walk again or something.

I got the flu shot for the first time last year and went through the winter unscathed by what was a pretty bad flu year.

Just got the shot for this year last Thurs, and don't feel any different than I did before I got it. Downsides seem minimal. shrug

Used to never get the shots.

4 years ago I got the flu so fooking bad that I tore the muscle in between my ribs from coughing (I also puked from over exertion). Because of the rib injury I was unable to take a deep breath so I developed pneumonia.

Hospital for 3 days.

I get the shot every year now. Got it last month and felt a little down for a couple days afterward. Probably psychosomatic.

Ive seen one end up dead and I think 3 or 4 end up on ECMO (google it to see how fun it looks) and in the hospital for months.

Just to clarify: (not to you CM)
You can get a severe cold and its still not the flu, nor is it as bad as the flu would be.
Flu shots do not cause the flu.
Just get your flu shots people.

I got the no-preservative one this year. Didn't feel much better than the preservative one. I think it just doesn't contain mercury, but still has all the other nasty stuff in it. I always feel run down for a few days after the shot.

I doubt is was psychosomatic.

Your body is reacting to the virus protein coat (and maybe some of the chicken [egg] protein). You have an immune response to that. You feeling a bit off or feverish or achy, etc, is part of your immune response...a healthy immune response may be a little overzealous in some people.

You couldn't PAY me to skip the flu shot. If you get actual influenza A or B (or worst-case-scenario) both
you are going to be mighty sick.

A severe cold is not the flu.
Human metapneumovirus is not the flu, although it would fool you.

People do not die from the flu shot.
People do die from influenza.

I get the flu shot every year. Work hounds people who pass on the shot since they administer right in our building. I still got the flu last year so bad.

A friend of mine had always passed on the shot. And the H1N1 scared him and his family years back. They were making plans to get the shot and his daughter came down with H1N1. It nearly killed her and she is handicapped for the rest of her life. In a wheelchair, no hope of a real life, requires 24 hour care.

That makes me get the flu shot.

My daughter (school teacher) and her husband took my two granddaughters for their flu shots to a preferred (by their Blue Cross Anthem) health insurance provider) clinic. The family pays approximately $500/month health insurance premiums.

The clinic staff refused to inoculate the girls and stated the clinic was limiting the flu shot inventory for people who couldn't afford insurance.

Needless to say, the clinic and Blue Cross Anthem will lose the families membership.

Such bvll sh!t

What does that even mean? Just go to Rite-Aid or any other drug store and get it. Spend 2 minutes calling ahead to make sure they have it.

I got mine today. I normally don't but I'm going to Asia and who wants the flu while he trying to chase young Asian women around ticking them?

I've never had one. I've gotten what might have been the flu a few times in my adult life and just figured it was part of life. Few days of fever and one to two weeks of feeling like poo. No telling if the shot would have prevented it. Every time it was because co-workers came to work sick and spread the joy.

Got the shot this year. Lots of international air travel. Not so easy to deal with the flu when you cant afford the time away, or get it while away.

Have skipped some years. No reason other than I forgot or felt too late in the season to care.

Not dead yet.

I had Anthem Blue Cross as well but they just told me to go to Rite Aid or CVS and get a shot. Fully covered. I now have Blue Shield but the result is the same. It's much easier to get the shot at a pharmacy than it is to schedule an appointment with my Dr., who by the way, is always out when I call.

Just get the shot and move on. If everyone would get the darn shot there would be less chance of people getting the flu. The only people who think they feel sick from receiving the shot are hypochondriacs. You don't get sick from getting the shot, it's a myth. The shot is not a 100% sure way of not catching the flu, but at least it helps. Especially if you use mass transit at all.

I don't like to be around people who recently traveled, especially with 2 kids 3, and 9 months. Over the holidays there was a cousin who flew in from asia. Yeah, tried to keep my distance.

The worst is being on the airplane death tube. Always paranoid about getting sick after being crammed into a tight dirty space with 150 other people's germs. Its the only place where germ phobia hits me. Nothing like going on a surf trip and having s sick kid directly behind you coughing, sneezing and being a miserable little shit for a five hour flight and knowing you'll probably end up getting that little bastard's cold.

How I think about the flu shot:
Let's say the current year's flu shot covers 10 strains for easy math. If you get it, it's the equivalent of getting the flu and building your library of antibodies 10 times, each of a different strain. If you don't get it, and you catch whatever flu strain is going around this year, you just added the antibodies for one strain.

After 5 years, your library of antibodies will cover around 50 different strains vs. 5 strains (if you get the flu once a year).

I'm not assuming you'll be immune from 50 different strains, since they mutate, but at least your immune system could recognize 50 different strains and you won't become as sick and will recover more quickly, if you catch a strain that is related to one of your 50.

Ok, this is not true.
- 2018/19 flu vaccine is trivalent, meaning it uses proteins derived from 3 strains.
- Flu virus is one the fastest mutating viruses known to science, which is the reason that you need a flu shot each fall.
(because it mutates so quickly, antibody 'memory' from getting the flu shot 3 years ago does not confer any significant immunity this year).

Get your flu shot peeps.

I don't think people understand what the flu even is. "I got the shot but I still got the flu" happens for sure, but a sore throat and cough isn't the flu, nor is a stomach virus.

Yeah, 3 or 4 strains in reality.

I didn't study viruses, but it seems like partial recognition of mutated strains is still helpful:

Rather than being a problem, they propose that "[antibodies] classically associated with original antigenic sin might play an important role in protecting the host against secondary encounters with antigenically drifted viral strains."

"One major shift that's occurred is in the viruses that are circulating. At the start of the flu season, the predominant strain was influenza A H1N1, but now a more severe strain, influenza A H3N2, accounts for nearly half of all the new cases, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"It looks like we are moving from an H1 wave to an H3 wave," said Lynnette Brammer, lead of CDC's domestic influenza surveillance team. "There's still a lot of flu to come."

On the plus side, this year's vaccine is more effective than last year's was. According to Brammer, this vaccine is 62 percent effective against H1N1 and 44 percent effective against H3N2.

For children aged 6 months to 17 years, overall vaccine effectiveness is 61 percent, according to the CDC.

Flu kills many young people. People with flu are highly contagious to others.
GET THE FRIGGIN' SHOT EVERY SINGLE YEAR. End of story.
Very little verifiable EVIDENCE against it. Maybe egg allergy. Everything else is anecdotal whining.
The shot will NOT give you the flu. It may make your arm a bit sore or feel a bit feverish for a day or two. You can still catch a cold regardless. A cold is NOT the flu.

GET THE SHOT EVERY YEAR.
