Between your memory/the other medium size rocks that look similar and watchful eyes you didn't see were around... that can be a dangerous game.

I have been on the losing end of both. bricks

Bring a lock box and hang it somewhere underneath the car.

Like the lock box idea , sometimes the rental car has a valet key attached to the key unit , pop it out and your good to go

lock box a good idea but some of those electronic keys are bulky and do not quite fit.

Some cars wont lock no matter how you try to lock them with the valet key. (Looking at you, Jeep). But a Toyota I had would lock if you manually locked the drivers side with the valet and the fob inside. For the shitty ones that dont have that feature, I found it easier to just pop the battery out of the fob and take the valet key.

Had to solve this problem about a month ago in Costa Rica without the luxury of planning ahead. I ended up buying a bag of ziplock freezer bags. The really good quality thick ones with the blue lip. I triple bagged the electronic key fob using fresh bags every morning and put it into the front pocket of my Billabong board shorts that zipped completely shut.

I surfed up to HH+ powerful waves over the course of 5 days and it worked well.

A little bit of water always seemed to get inside the first bag, the second bag usually contained a few drops, and the inside of the third bag was always bone dry.

I was lucky to have the boardshorts with the zippered pockets though. Otherwise it might have been a bit sketchy.

I bought one of those little dry bags for your phone for 20 bucks and put it in my back pocket of my boardshorts.

Worked fine but I'm still paranoid about it.

On my trip to Kauai this summer I wrapped it in a crumpled up paper towel and put
it in a ziplock freezer bag, then hid it in the bushes. Worked for me (knocks on wood).

I would be concerned with a) locals seeing you do this and thinking you're littering b) locals seeing you do this and proceeding to steal all your shit.

I usually bury them in the sand and mark the spot with seagull feathers, kelp or driftwood. Yesterday a dog pissed on them.

Just bought a Loksak on amazon- supposedly good up to 60 feet below the surface (we'll see!). It was $10.
