What did these guys do to provoke so much outrage in the letters section?

Was hoping to see a photo.

I had a huge stash of Breakout Magazines. Their office was a block away from the Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad.

I tried to sell them with all my Surfer Mags from 84-mid 90s. No takers,

Then got a call from a guy with a son with autism.

Said his son loves looking at waves and surfing. They came over and his son was so stoked when he saw all the mags Gave all the tubs of mags to them for free. Sorta like giving a board away. smile Vibes all around.

Sorry, already threw the mag away.

One of the letter writers used words to the effect of "hands caught in the cookie jar" but seems it had something to do with contest surfing. I found it comical and was curious of the backstory.

Seems people took competitive surfing way serious back then.

Story about the kid with autism is funny in a trippy way, glad he was stocked.

At the time, NSSA required competitors to be full time students with amateur athlete status. The only ads NSSA competitors were allowed to appear in were advertisements for NSSA national team sponsors. Ted and Kelly were planning on finishing high school, competing in the world amateur championships and then turning pro. They quit going to school, the NSSA found out and they werent allowed to compete in the world contest. The team Australia sent to the world contest was comprised of professional surfers including Gary Kong Elkerton and Damien Hardman who werent under the same restrictions as Californians. Heres Matt Warshaws much more eloquent account:

Matt Warshaw on Gary Elkerton and Richard Woolcott

NSSA rules for interference at that time were that the surfer who snaked wouldnt be penalized other than the wave he snaked on wouldnt be scored. The victim got no compensation. There was a lot of outrage when Mike Parsons was snaked by an aussie possibly costing him the world amateur title. In the end, Scott Farnsworth won and Jeff Booth placed second. Ted and Kelly went on to live pretty great lives without high school classes being an issue.

I figured it was something completely ridiculous like that.

It seems competitive surfing was really serious business back then.

Local history:
By this time in l8 '84, John was kinda burnt on the contest scene, though in years earlier he'd get under Curren's skin and beat him regularly in ol' W.S.A. 3A comps. Supposedly Tommy was even seen cryin' after 1 event where, iirc, John got a barrel, came out + did a spun~louey right afterwards and got the win, again...

That Ted/Kelly fiasco was such a shocker to many, like me,
who read about it in the mags, + who admired their surfin' here in L.A.
F**k School!

What's it been said, years later ~ screw the system?

Glad that Kelly+Ted both did well in life afterwards...

Hiya Surfshot!
Fun to re~visit old history,
bet many here never knew much of this US Surf Team.

The '84 US Surf Team won the World Title that year!
The team wouda been stronger if Kelly+Ted were allowed to compete in the US Team trials,
and probably make it on, too. But that said, we beat The Aussies who were surely favored to win,
with Kong on their Team. Keepin' in mind Aussie surfin' had for~ever been the best in the world for sooo many years, whilest we Americans were just wankers, as Occy called us! BUT we won!!!

Just for fun, anyone wanna help me name a few members whose names I can not re~call?
Thanks, RW
