The surf industry/surf media never thought it was cool. Tom Morey provided a cheaper, easier entry level option. High performance surfing has progressed so much since the 70's. An old guy on his knees doesn't look as cool as JJF 10ft above the lip. No kids taking up kneeboarding to replace the old guys.

Still a few dedicated old half-men ripping it up. More power to them.

I was forced to kneeboard due to a injury.

It's boring in crappy waves that could be fun on a groveler surfboard.

Fun in fun waves.

Grabbing the rail and cranking a hard bottom turn feels good. So does coming off the top with speed.

I'm still a kook on it.

It's hard for me to pump the board to gain speed the way you would on a surfboard or a skate board.

I haven't really done it in waves of consequence because of said injury.

Better than nothing and it more closer approximates stand up surfing that belly boarding or body surfing.

I just picked up a load of surf mags - mostly 1970s - and there are plenty of kneeboard photos in them. confused2

When I was a kid some contests had a kneeboarding division. I haven't seen a kneeboarder in the water in at least 20 years. There was a pretty inspirational guy I'd see in the water up until a few years ago in his 70s who would ride a longboard like a kneeboard because he could no longer stand up due to age and injury.

i think that's how Doc Paskowitz was still surfing towards the end. kneeboarding is most fun for me when there's a decent swell but the tide is a little high....when the wave is feathering on the outside but it's a little too fat for a shortboard to connect to the inside, a kneeboard fills the hole nicely.

The old hb crew frowns on rail grabs, sure sign of kook
But as someone said above as I get older & popping gets tougher I'd go kneeboard before I resort to a longboard

Grabbing the rail, cranking a bottom turn, get barreled, pull out...nothing more...no "standing" up on your knees, wiggling around...ugh!

Grabbing the rail feels good.

I'm past giving a F what the cool kids think.

I don't know why the fcuk he was like that. He never did it to me and we always got on well so I never called him on it.

tom snaked me once....... once....... beer

Dogman was legendary!! So many people are so happy he moved to PPK land. Endless Tom stories... Probably the most hated guy ever and there's been some doozies over the years. Thank god he was mostly a south peak guy so I didn't have to deal with him as much as some of you other guys.

Regarding the topic, Casa hit most of the points. It's like the debate in the design forum regarding feel vs looks. I've seen video and pictures of myself and I know what feels good does not always look good.
In the end who cares Fall is here and we are off to a not so bad start.

Buddy McCray, Timmy Tanaka, Stan Ishikawa, and David Shinbara were all great riders.

Add the Holzman brothers and Lee Pattison to the HI kneeboard crew. All three are madman chargers.
