Although, I think without using the wood keels, a board is straying pretty far from a true Mini Simmons, and becomes a "super modern" variant, per the original post. To go back to the OP, brycor564, I love the HydroDynamica GMM2 as a modern variant of the Simmons (I've gushed about it on other threads so sorry to repeat). Shaped by Tomo, it essentially blends a mini Simmons and a modern planing hull (Evo) for higher performance. It allows you glide and feel the speed if you just want to cruise, but can also crank turns and release the tail. While I totally get the point made by cdes of getting a true simmons, this board is still unique in my quiver, different sensation to my other boards, and I only ride it waist high and below. Would love to try a CyberSim as a tri. It's on my wishlist for sure.
If you want to go traditional mini Simmons, I'd say go with glassed-on dual keels, by someone who has been doing them for a long time like Hydrodynamica or the shapers he uses: Jon Wegener, Mitsven, Hank Warner.
You'll have a blast. Let us know what you decide to go with!

Thanks to all for your input, except 20W, lol. Being that I have a modern variant already, the Flying Manta, a traditional shape with keels is intriguing me the most right now for my next purchase. That Simster model though, definitely has my attention. Here is a link to a website dedicated to Mini Simmons that I came across the other day. http://www.minisimmonssurfboards.com/ode-to-the-shaper/

Ok, that was pretty funny.
But I'm just happy to see a thread not devolve into yet another "FW is evil! Custom boards are good!" argument by the same 8 people. Hope I didn't just jinx it!

I guess it depends on where you surf and the type of waves. I had a twin keel mini simmons when they were all the rage. Good board for points. Terrible on the backhand. Then i got the quad variety. Glass on marine ply. Still in my quiver today. Crazy flat rocker - stringerless 5'0. One of the best boards i've had. But often the waves i ride are short and fast. You need boards that get up to speed quickly and are able to turn sharply, so this was the right choice. It works from ankle high to chest high. Very different from my twin keel fish.

Is that an all around board or your groveller Greg? Or all of the above? I think your next on my list for a custom smile I think I'd be the 1st in Maine with a Griffin!

Beautiful boards Greg! I've got to sell off a few before my next order. I've been on one of Martial's booster pockets glassed by Alvin almost exclusively for the last year. I've been window shopping on your website and am torn between the hovercraft, retro fish, or modern fish.

The mini Simmons is a lot of fun when theyre done correctly.

Done wrong, and theyre a turd, twin keels or quad.

Find a shaper who makes a great keel fish, and youll probably be happy.

I dont understand the 3rd fin in the middle of the side fins?? Why would you need the fin in the middle? Seems like it would cause a little unnecessary drag, and wouldn't really provide any significant use?
