I'll be staying at Lohi's and plan to bring a daily driver, hpsb, and a step-up.

Anyone been? Any advice is appreciated. Is there anything you wish you had brought that's not obvious?

I was there at the end of September into October. 3 weeks total. It was firing. I rode a CI flyer in everything from waist to double overhead +. I brought 4 boards and regretted it.

This was back in 2004. Wow I can't believe that was 14 years ago. I need to get back there. Best trip of my life. Better than 6 months in Indo.

Thanks Ranch. Good advice. I'll get the thickest sunscreen I can find. I too am going through Dubai. Not particularly looking forward to that part. Your pics aren't working, unfortunately.

Good to know. I've been considering taking 2 boards only, but that makes me a little nervous.

What would you guys say the water temp was? Looking for some sun and wind protection in the water, but I don't own a button down hawaiian shirt (hipster joke).

Was anyone wearing a vest or a jacket or would you cook yourself in that?

It has been awhile but I do remember in the afternoons sometimes thinking that a 1 mil vest would be nice against the wind. But I'm from Maine so it never felt cold. I think two boards are fine. Two HPSBs. You could pack a step up right before depending on the forecast I guess but again, I surfed a few days that were solid double overhead with some bigger sneaker sets and my 6'0 flyer went off. The waves are just so perfect. How long are you going for?

10 days in early October.

Good advice on the boards. I'm sure I'll be fine with a dd and a hpsb then.

I'll bring a 1mm vest too, just in case. The wind always gets to me anyways.

Thanks for the tips cheers

Those didn't work. Try this:

Click on your photobucket picture. On the right side of the screen there will be a box titled "photo hosting links." Highlight the entire link next to the IMG heading and copy it. Paste that link in your post here. Hopefully that works.

Ya, those links that Sharkbiscuit posted are pretty detailed and I can't add much more.

October is the transition period for surf, it seems. Earlier in the month, the better chances of head high surf or better.

Some seasons are better than others. Depends how the high pressure gradient off West Oz behaves during the usual surf season (So Hemi winter). The stronger the gradient, the larger and more consistent the surf will be. April to October is most consistent. Passing storms in the southern ocean can also potentially offer long period S-SSE swells, though not full force S-SW's that Indo and Bali get.

South winds and rainy weather can also run for a days at time (June-early Sept), but usually not long stretches. It's hot and humid as heck, being on the ocean when the sun's out, so be prepared with sunscreen and lots of water (they usually supply 2 liters a day). Take your water with you on the boat rides off resort island. Rash guards for sun protection is about all you need. It doesn't get cold, unless you chill in cloudy rainy/windy days in 80-85 degree water. 2 boards will be plenty. A typical everyday banger (shoulder to head high+) and a step-up for the potential well O'head to maybe 2x Ohead days if you get lucky.

You will have fun, no matter what.

Surf 'em if you got 'em

A quick followup:

Had a great trip! Waves were anywhere from waist high to a few feet overhead. Daily driver and hpsb were the perfect boards to bring.

We got pretty lucky with some great weather. It was windy and rainy for 10 days straight prior to our arrival. On our first day, I met a few people that had been there a week and hadn't surfed at all. We got waves every day of the trip except the first.

Water and air were in the mid 80's. I was comfortable in trunks most of the time. I put a 1mm vest on a couple of mornings and evenings when the wind kicked up. I was really glad I brought the vest because it gave my sore ribs a little bit of cushion from all the abuse they were taking from multiple sessions a day.

The sun is no joke there. I got burned on my legs the first day from a two hour session. I never put sunscreen on my legs at home. Big mistake not to do it here.

I stayed on Hudhuranfushi.

The nice thing is that they have an exclusive wave that only those staying on the island with a surf pass can surf. They limit the number of surf passes on the island to 44 or so. It can get busy......20 people out at one time, but they also have boat trips twice a day to other spots. Those other spots can be empty or busy depending on boats from other resorts.

The food was great, but it did get a bit repetitive after a week. Standard american breakfast choices while lunch and dinner often consisted of rice, a choice of beef, chicken, or fish, and vegetables.

All and all, I'd definitely recommend it and want to go back. The only other place I would want to stay is the 4 Seasons because they have a couple of really good waves off the island. Those waves are not exclusive however, so they can get really busy. Also, I can't afford the 4 seasons bawling

A boat trip around the southern atolls would be epic as well.

From what I hear, the southern atolls are probably better (and less crowded) any time during south swell season, but it's a completely different kind of trip (boat trip). It would be awesome to do that kind of trip as well. Hopefully one day.

I met a few people at Hudhuranfushi that go there year after year, some twice a year. Some of them go in March and say it's awesome, so long as there is South swell.

Bottom line, it's hard to go wrong with Hudhuranfushi. It's an awesome place, everyone is cordial, the staff is really cool, and the waves in the area are really fun.

Also, the staff takes pictures of you surfing and will put them all on a thumb drive for you (at a cost). I got some shots that were worthwhile:

Sick pics Jkb wow , remember seeing the wave on the way out to Sultans , it was my 50th did the 4 seasons Kuda Huraawith wife and I hit on a stock that took care of it all , I have to say had my best sessions at Jail Breaks , blew my mind , on a 6-4 fish Proctor I'm 200lbs and the board just flew , had to be the wave and board not me , went with or without me , it had me thinking of the club med spot behind the wave I talked to guys in the water and they said it was solid , and it's walk to Jailbreaks paddle in , had one session 3 of us out there , what interested me as well was at Sultans you could really see what boards worked and what didn't guys wouldn't make it and get snapped by the lip to the head , the size of Tomo's blew me away too , small and flew like Jkb there , enjoy I will be back one day , sun screen to the max amigo
