I have a small well rounded board quiver. Lately I have been favoring my log since I can only paddle out a few days a week for an hour or less, so I want to maximize my time. The first thing is that I don't drive a monster SUV or have a pick up so I need to strap on my log to the top of my car. The next issue is getting that tight board sock on and off. Then lugging the log to the beach. Lastly paddling out has to be timed just right to avoid a turtle roll, granted I can paddle out as quick as a prone paddleboard. Catching waves easy-check, popping up like I am on my living room floor at home-check, staying in the pocket-check, carving a turn-WTF? I have to back step, back shuffle step, then weight the eff on back foot and most of the time I oversteer or overwieght and I stall or wipe out (actually just fall off). cutbacks are non-existent as are other maneuvers that I could do with ease even on my 8'6" funboard/shortboard hybrid (I just asked a shaper to make something for a 6'1" 230 lb guy and wallah frankensteen board).
Now I know why most longboarders I see just get in the pocket and trim.

Its not about doing the most turns

Its about chilling and rolling with the wave

Its easy to paddle and catch waves

Its hard to flow and make it look effortless

Sort of like ice dancing

"Turtle roll", hahaha. Learn how to duck dive a long board and the cutbacks will seem easy. It's rewarding though and the improvement in your technique will carry over to short boards. It's technique, not weight or power. I weigh 170 but can slip anything under a wave.

The positives dont outweigh the negatives for me, but Im not a very good surfer.

- PITA to carry around and deal with.

- Flipping around to go for a wave is like trying to turn a cruise ship.

- Cant duck dive and turtle rolling sucks so you end up just bull dogging your way through any breaking waves.

- More difficult to ride in steeper pitching waves.

+ Catches and rides small / soft waves easier.

+ Is there another positive?

The older I get the less I like schlepping around a longboard. Mine is a triple stringer with heavy glass, so it's a real throwback. On the plus side, it floats me high enough that I can skip a wetsuit if it's sunny and warm.

I've mostly gone back to shortboards, but if the waves are super small and running, there's nothing like trimming a log.

love my logs. keeps me happy in the never ending non-event surf we've been having.

I have a few longboards but don't ride them very often mostly because they are such a hassle to deal with. Getting them out of the house and to the beach is a hassle. I got a Stewart Redline 11 this fall after hurting my shoulder. Its pretty light and easier to transport than my other traditional logs but I still grab a shortboard unless the waves are such that its impossible to ride a shortboard. The good thing with this board is that its easy to carry under my arm on my bicycle so perhaps this summer I'll ride it more.

Conservatives get angry when you lie to them. Liberals get angry when you tell
them the truth.

You summed it up.
I need to change my attitude on the log.

If it's under waist high, I log. Most people around here do. There's a ton of guys that rip shortboards and logs equally well around here.

Both surfing and ice dancing allow me to wear skin tight outfits, so yes

our local surf coach is a longboarder.
he prays at a church that is very angry at the citizens of our town.

except for the reality part....neither of those statements makes any sense at all.
