I was talking to his sister as he came up/over the E buttress during his bike/hike tour of the 14k peaks. There was a little bit of commotion, but I took off (it was beginning to snow) and didn't realize the context until I read about it later.

https://www.climbing.com/people/inside-the-sufferest-two-world-class-climbers-on-bikes/

A couple of things come to mind when considering this kind of extreme athlete:

One, did anyone notice the mention that his brain/physio has been studied by researchers? It's my contention that the MIC black ops pay these types of people to participate in DNA studies. Of course, they would be under strict non-disclosure, etc, but they probably receive an OK stipend. It's not difficult to imagine genetically engineered design plans for soldiers with both super endurance & incredible calmness in the face of life threatening danger.

Two, the dude is probably pulling in way over $100k/year from video deals, endorsements, public appearances, etc. The van living is just a means of reducing overhead and increase flexibility to pursue training & climbs.

Third, bonus question: who noticed he learned how to climb indoors in Sacramento? Barreling wave parks of the future producing next generation surf stars?

Found the study. His brain on the left and cross hairs pointed on his amygdala.

Interesting read, especially the part about his girlfriend damn near killing him by accident. Suffered compression fractures in two vertebrae. https://www.instagram.com/sannimccandless/?hl=en

Dude is on another level. Reality is he'll likely die doing what he loves. Odds aren't in his favor. But he's already lived more than most of us. Dude is already a living legend at 31.

Holy sh!t! I'm not a climber, but I've done it enough times to almost grasp how f'ckn gnarly that it!
bowdown

My favorite piece of the interview:

I was watching through a telescope. At Heart Ledge it looked like you were trying to get a water bottle youd stashed without waking anyone up.

I woke up one guy and he sort of said oh hey. Then when I went by, I think he discreetly woke up his buddies because when I looked down they were all three standing there like what the ****?

I'd say learning how to climb indoors is more akin to "learning" how to surf on a knee high day while going straight in the whitewater. It's a start but you won't really hone your skills until you put your time in and get into the real stuff. Additionally, most climbers start climbing outdoors very soon after they start climbing in gyms, if they get really into it. It's not like they spend years climbing only in gyms then they're killing it the first time on a real route.

I laughed at this comment:

On the one hand,
climbing without gear make things easier
Gear is heavy and throws off your balance, setting protection is a ton of work, and waiting for your partner to follow makes everything take twice as long.

On the other hand, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Amazing accomplishment

The North Face is his main sponsor, the best guess is he makes about $150,000 a year which he donates $50,000 to his foundation. The minimum salary for Mlb is $535,000.

And he used to be sponsored by Clif Bar, but they dropped him (and a handful of others) because Clif Bar wasn't comfortable supporting athletes performing such dangerous endeavors.

Either way, Alex is a friggin legend.

I imagine the company that made his climbing shoes are probably throwing parties. Could there ever be more definitive proof that a product is well made and does what it's supposed to?

Cliff bars are gross. Someone must be eating them. I still see them in Target and other stores.

They still have the first to market advantage. But yeah, someone must be eating them if they are still taking up shelf space in big retailers.

I'm not a big granola/energy bar person in general, but I do like Kind Bars if I see a long duration without food options. They seem to be creeping on Clif Bars shelf space computer

This is the most extreme thing ever done that I can think of! Am beyond words on this unbelievable accomplishment! Can't wait to see the National Geographic footage of this when it comes out!
