I've been told Oakley's Black Iridum are the darkest sunglasses on the market. Any truth to the claim? Any owners out there?

Asking cause I work nights and want the darkest thing possible when I leave work in the morning. Most sunglasses simply aren't that dark and I'm wondering if the difference is significant with these.

Funny you asked that, I'm getting the Eyepatch 2 in Violet Iridium and i talked to the rep about it, he told me its more aesthetics than function. Same glasses as all Oakleys, but with different cosmetics.

Oakley has a pretty impressive chart of their lens tints:

http://www.oakley.com/innovation/optical-superiority/lens-tints

According to the chart, their Black Iridium and Dark Grey lenses are the darkest lenses - letting through 10% of outside light and have the highest protection level of all their lenses. Says meant for very bright light. The iridum is a glare reduction coating, so I guess it's more about glare. But I've read reviews where some people actually find the lenses TOO dark.

FYI, the lenses you ordered (Violet Iridium) are of the lowest rating protection wise and apparently let in 55% of outside light.

I just picked up a pair of Fives Squared with Black Iridium Polarized lenses. If you can spring the extra $ for the polarized ones, they kick ass.

Do you have to own a lowered Honda and wear your baseball hat backwards to own those sunglasses?

I have them and I don't think they are very dark. They are definitely darker than the normal Oakley gray, but not that dark.

imo, don't like their steeziness much...but oakley tested as the best/clearest/lowest-diffraction polarized lens for fishing in side-by-side tests w/ other top end shades.

got a pair from a photog amigo who gets em for free.

I have Oakley Men's Half Jacket Iridium Sport Sunglasses and certainly it is great sunglasses . I use it especially baseball and some other outdoor activities . They get their durability from being made of a lightweight yet solid composite plastic material. These sunglasses are not only durable and lightweight but they are also very comfortable when they are on.

Like most all Oakley brand sunglass products they offer superior protection against such things as the suns harmful UV rays. They do a great job of cutting down glare when playing baseball or softball in them and they wrap totally around your eyes so light is kept from coming in from any angle.
I got great and informatioal reviews about it from http://www.baseballrace.com/best-baseball-sunglasses-reviews/ before purchased .
