Hey,

I've been having a rough time with rib pain (lower rib area, probably the tendons that connect the bottom ribs to abdominal muscles) while surfing last few months. I wanted to find out: a) how many other surfers out there suffer similar pain (mild or severe) and b) who else is looking for a way of fixing it. Most of the products that try to fix this issue are totally ridiculous (inflatable vests and the like).

Would be grateful if you would take the following 2 minute survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/surf-injury-survey

Thanks!
Joe

Lower rib pain. More likely for a surfer simply repeated rubbing against the board deck causing irritation.

Peace,

Every time I surf some place where I don't have to wear a wetsuit, my lower ribs, aka "the pokey ribs", are tender to the touch for a few days,

And every September, after more or less not really surfing since May, first few days, even with a wetsuit, same effect.

Then they toughen up and the problem is solved.

Last year I strained my intercostal muscles (the small muscles between the ribs). It sucks because literally everything you do uses them, from breathing to driving and yeah, sarfin'. I took a few weeks off to let them heal. I ensure that I stretch them out properly before jumping in water. I also normally wear a 1.5mm top, too, if it's a trunk day given I have little body fat. Also seems to help. But stretching them out it key. They're engaged with every paddle.

I only surf like Dane on Sundays

This happened when I first lost weight. I never put 2 and 2 together but I think you're onto something

I am and have always been a pussy though.

My entire existence is a failed gotcha

please please please see a doctor...I had rib pain for the longest time and came to find out I had some fractured ribs and a torn intercostal muscle. Not saying thats the case for you, I hope not as it takes forever to heal. If it's just tender its probably what other people are saying about laying on your board. I just got back from PR and was surfing in a tee shirt everyday and my ribs are a little tender (doesn't happen even with my spring suit)
