bricks $$$$$$$$$... with Hawaii having some of the best surfing the world. tomato

Honolulu (HawaiiNewsNow)

A development group is planning to build a surf resort on Oahu. That in itself isn’t earth-shattering news. The fact that it won’t feature any of Hawaii’s fabled surf breaks is.
"The whole concept is to be able to share waves. It's tough to rely on the ocean for consistency as all surfers know--but if you can create waves, you've got more waves to go around and more waves to share" said Tyler Greene, Managing Partner for Surf City Hui LLC. Greene explains the thinking behind "The Endless Summer Resort", which will be built around an artificial wave pool.
"We probably get those special days maybe 5-7 days a season. And then when you do get them there's 40 guys in the lineup and everyone is upset and agro and angry and they want to get waves" said Greene.
Greene and his partners are currently looking at three sites on Oahu--focusing on the leeward side. They also have a site in mind on the Big Island. The resort will feature approximately 250 rooms.
The company hopes to feature Kelly Slater's wave pool design.
"It's a safe and friendly environment, all the way from a mush, knee high wave for a beginning long boarded to head high barrel for a more experienced surfer."
The project is in the design stage, with fundraising initiatives to begin shortly. Though some may scoff at his ambition--Greene is used to bucking the odds. He and business partner Chad Waters are the force behind the renovation of the Coco Palms Resort on Kauai. Like Coco Palms, the surf resort will feature special attention to physical and cultural space.
“Teach them the right way, teach them about the history of surfing, teach them how to respect the water and and the locals and the culture of surfing" he said.
Greene says if all the stars align, such a resort could open in 2019.

*** Waters & Green have been dragging there feet asking for continued extensions on doing the renovations on the old CoCo Palms Hotel. I pulled the UST ( underground storage tanks) that supplied diesel fuel to run certainly facilities on property. Because of the salt water content and the UST's being at or just below sea level, they eventually rotted out and leaked diesel fuel into the lagoon area. That was upteen years ago.

Demolition will be tight due to the stringent laws now in effect for these old types of buildings & materials used such as asbestos. Local newspaper has said in the past that the Hyatt Hotel chain maybe the folks who will be on property.

I am sure it looks good on paper but land and electricity costs really put the whammy on balancing the numbers. I think it would show up in Vegas before here.

5-7 "special" days per season and how many good to great but not special days? 40 guys is crowded? So they expect people to go on a surf trip to Oahu and surf a wave pool?

Crunching the numbers and yes, we need more traffic! We aren't number one in the nation yet, only 3rd behind LA and NYC.

I LOVE the idea of a wavepool here. Less people in the water and a stronger belief that surfing NEEDS to be done in perfect waves. Both of those make me happy.
