My new car uses a Smart Key system both to enter and start the car. It does have a physical key but it is only used the enter the car. If I try to hide the smart key electronic fob anywhere around the car, the door locks can sense it nearby allowing anyone to get inside. Anyone have a solution to this? Thanks

will it allow you to leave the "smart" key inside the car? if so, you can lock the electronic key inside & stash the locks-only key somewhere on the suspension w/ a magnetic hide-a-key.

I put my STS FOB in the trunk and lock the doors then put the entry key in my wetsuit.

On my toyota there is a button to disable the smartkey system. That way you can leave the smart key inside, take the door key with you and go surf.

Wrap it in tinfoil and put it in your glove box it blocks the signal then you just have to worry about losing the manual key!

Not on newer models.

It's all in good fun.

Yes, thanks. So the system detected that the smart key fob was still in the car and would not lock electronically but when I used the physical key (from inside the smart key fob) to lock the doors the system appeard to be deactivated. I hope. The only flaw there is if someone were able to get inside the car then they'd have the smart key to start the engine. But this is the best solution so far.

Something like this might work. If you hang it off a loop in the rear of the car, maybe out of fob range?

I have been experiencing the same problem. I just bought a new 2016 Toyota Highlander and it has a smartkey. The tin foil strategy worked for me and I am so stoked (wrapped the smartkey in tin foil, placed inside glove box, and used door key to lock the car!!)
