I've got a pain in my joint, under the ball of the foot, in my big toe. It's been bothering me for little over a week. It's more like a dull pain, like a bruise or a sprain. Is that turf toe? I think I might have hyper extended my toe while surfing about two weeks ago. It only started to bother me after a few more days of surfing. I took a week off and it started to feel better, but surfed on it this morning. It now feels like it did last week. There's no bruising or swelling.

Other then rest, is there anything else I can do? I really don't want to miss any more water time.

I've had no experience with turf toe as it's mostly an injury in field sports so I asked my colleague who is an athlete trainer for professional soccer. He said it's the sprain in ligament of the big joint of the toe and recommends RICE. Rest, ice, elevation and compression. Sorry but rest is called for he also suggested ibuprofen. Good luck!

I hyperextended my toe a week ago... long story short, my big toe almost touched the top of my foot.

Went to the Dr. and xrays came back negative. No MRI, but he believes it to be a grade 2 turf toe.

I can walk fine, but if I try to sprint or explode of my toes it hurts. He told me 1 to 3 weeks, but I haven't tried surfing on it. It doesn't feel ready yet.

Any info on rehab or prognosis would be awesome! Thanks guys...

Had turf toe in college. The athletic trainers had me put a metal insole in my shoe to prevent the toe from bending/flexing. Speed up the healing by keeping it stable. You could maybe put one in a booty and wear it while surfing. Might feel awkward, but would keep the toe stable.

Thanks Sushi...

I'll rig something up. I'm on week 2. I can now walk and jog with no problem, but if I try to plant, pivot, or explode off the ball of my foot my toe joint still really hurts.

Makes sense though, if I can stop my toe from hyperextending I should be alright.

Under the ball of the foot is not turf toe. Gout hits that joint so does osteoarthritis and bunions as a result of malalignment of the tarsal/metatarsals etc.

If rest and local care (foam inserts, soft properly fitting shoes etc.) don't help get to a podiatrist.

I'm back to surfing and front side is ok, but back hand hurts to the point where I try and not go left.
I hurt myself 3 weeks ago and still have some pain.

I pm'd you SurfDoc.

I read up a bit on Gout, osteoarthitis and bunions. I'm pretty sure it's none of those. I'm think I just hyper-extended/sprained the joint.

It's slowly gotten better, but I've still been surfing on it regularly - so it hasn't gotten much rest. I had some custom insoles from my running shoes and placed them in my daily shoes, that's helped a lot. I also haven't surfed since Monday, so it's feeling pretty good right now.

I'm having an unrelated, minor surgery towards the end of the month. The doctor doesn't want me to surf for 2 weeks. I'm hoping the rest then will clear everything up.

Thanks for the help and advice!

This pic pretty much sums up my issue.

Hey JP,

I got sick of not making much progress over the last month. So I decide to tape my toe when I surfed today. I used this method (although, I used more tape then they did) Turf Toe Tape Video
It helped a lot and my toe felt better then usual after a surf.

I am also looking to pick up a pair of insoles with steel supports. I believe these is what Sushipop was talking about. Turf Toe Insoles

Good luck with your toe!

I'm back in the water too. That pic captures it perfectly. This Friday will be 1 month for me and I'm still no where near 100%, but I'm happy to be able to surf agin. I've been using that taping method and seriously considering getting that insole.

I'm regular foot. I can go frontside fairly well, but backside is still really painful.

I think after I get past the closing on my new place I'm going to see a foot Dr. I might have torn something in there.

shrug Instead of starting a new thread ~ I have a 'toe question' I hope someone can answer shrug
Last summer while surfing my old home break without a wetsuit~
I caught a wave, my kuk kord was rapped around my big toe...
I got dusted off and my big toe was injured...
It 'feels' like I had the joint pulled apart and my toe is dangling by skin ,not atached by toe bones. It hurts to bend my foot , as shown in the image above my post...
I guess/know I should have x rayed it 9 months ago...
shrug has anyone ever had this happen? do you know what it is called? how to 'cure' it?
any advice appreciated
