Its go time!

Past Winners
In 1999, the first competition was held at Mavericks. Santa Cruz surfer Darryl “Flea” Virostko won that first event that truly put Mavericks on the map as an international phenomenon. Virostko went on to win again in 2000 and 2004, making him the only three-time Titans of Mavericks Champion. In 2005, the prize went to Santa Cruz surfer Anthony Tashnick, followed by the winning performance of South African big wave charger Grant “Twiggy” Baker in 2006. The 2008 contest found Greg Long of San Clemente as the winner. And the 2010 contest, regarded as the biggest paddle-in contest ever held in the world, was won by South Africa’s Chris Bertish. Clearly, the big wave world has found its stage at Mavericks. In 2013 long time Mavericks icon and influencer Peter Mel won. In 2014 Grant “Twiggy” Baker won again, crowning him a two time winner.

Too bad politics are keeping Pete Mel out of the contest. Him and Flea are the best ever out there.

I agree. What a waste of an opportunity for Mel. You only get so many shots at something like this. At least he's in the Eddie contest.

Politics and surfing make strange bedfellows.

sorry but he pretty much made the choice himself by working for the ASP. Is it worth quiting that job over surfing in one contest shrug

When Pete took the job with the WSL did he know some rich kook from Hollywood would take control of something that no kook should ever touch?
Jay would not be stoked on this scenario.

Notice the Mavs crowd last week? Mavs is a complete clustrefcuk now, and its another one of the spots that are only uncrowded during a contest.

In the not too distant future, the only guys getting uncrowded waves will be guys with jerseys on.

whoa, your bitterness really trips me out

Have you ever missed something because of work? Doesn't mean you don't want to do that thing any less. Guys like Mel live for Big Waves like Mavericks. It's in their blood and to compete against the best guys in the world at a place like Mavericks is probably something close to his heart. I'm just saying it's too bad bs politics of ASP is keeping from the event.

Peter Mel called the swell on 2/4/16 the best he has ever seen @ Mavericks...

Why was it so good?

my limited experience and thinking is as follows...

the swell direction was much "purer" than others. what i mean by this is that the storm produced a swell with a direction that did not vary much. a swell that is confined to a small directional spectrum results in a scenario where the natural, chaotic nature of a swell is reduced. when this swell energy from an ideal direction then interacts with a given stretch of sea floor, it behaves in a more rhythmic and predictable pattern. energy folds over the reef and pushes off the reef in a more efficient, less chaotic fashion.

buoy readings of mean wave direction (MWD) can be misleading. for instance, the mean of say, 300 and 360 is 330 while the mean of 328 and 332 is also 330. the latter scenario will have reduced chaos and unpredictability. while these conditions may not be exceptional for a nondescript stretch of beachbreak, a well shaped reefbreak like mavericks or a beachbreak with offshore canyon would tend to thrive. one of the better pipeline swells i've been witness to was produced by a storm that was small but intense and tracked toward the islands from a very specific direction.

food for thought ? shrug

Mark Sponsler has been fabulously accurate with his research and forecast in regards to this particular El Nino event (see below). I'll defer to the Hawaii guys for that last sentence in the stormsurf quote below...I think HI has been fortunate insofar as not getting the "stormy" conditions...?

Still - Late Feb & March could change that....

Quote:

This years event is westward displaced somewhat like the '82/83 super El Nino event, but not as strongly so. The main evidence for this is the continued eruption of Kelvin Wave #3 west of the Galapagos with weakened warming east of there. This suggests the Walker circulation is not displaced as far east as in '97 but more like '82/83. Best analysis from upper level charts suggests it's core is at 110W. At this time we're unsure what the effects on rainfall would be. Total rainfall in San Francisco in '82/83 was 38.17" (+16.38") versus 47.22" in '97/98 (+25.43"). The long term average is 21.79". In LA in '82/83 it was 31.28" (+16.47) versus 31.01" in '97 (+16.2"). Long term average 14.81". Regardless, both events were well above average. This also suggests the core of storm production will be north of the most warming. So rather than the Eastern to Central Gulf of Alaska being the focus, it might be more in the Western Gulf. This is actually a good thing relative to California by perhaps giving resulting swells more room to groom themselves before hitting the coast. This might bode not so well for Hawaii, with large stormy conditions the result. Of course, this is just speculation at this time.

The constant misdirection or "red herring" type of responses in this place by those who do not want to open their minds to the real subject is absolutely f*cking zany.

also forgot to add there was no other swell in the water and the strong high over the west coast did nothing but help welcome that swell.
