In preparation for the upcoming El Neenyo, show off your larger wave stuff. Photos, dims, your dims, and where you have ridden (or plan on riding) them. Bonus points for pics of the board being ridden by the owner.

7'0 Jorge Vicente minigun
He shaped me this but no idea on the dims. He didn't write the dims, when I picked it up he told me its something around 19+ wide and 2 5/8 thick I think. It's thick from the chest area up to the nose, and foiled from the mid to tail. Super thin tail. Ridden a couple times and felt really good.

6'5 18 1/8 2 1/4 Xanadu Semigun
Got this in 2011 and had the best waves of my life on it. Broken in half last year in Puerto but I like it so much that just got it fixed and kept riding it. Needs a replacement now and I'm thinking of getting something like a 6'2 inspired on ifall's 6'8 to replace her.

5'10 18.7 2.25 Pyzel Short Cut
Didn't ride it yet. Tail template came out different than what I was expecting but the board feels really good under the arm shrug I guess this will work amazing as my good wave board.

Rider dims 5'7 x 148lbs x 30 x average kook ability

Want a bigger gun but need the cash and bigger balls first. drowning

cheers

Ledge outline almost looks like that of a 70s single fin. Board looks awesome

Andrus 7'2" Sitting on an island waiting. I miss it.

Probably be a year or two til' I get on it again. Board rips. It is a big brother to a 6'8" that still rides great.
Thankfully I got a couple more pintails for good waves.

6'1 18 1/2 2 3/8 and 6'6 18 1/2 2 3/8 Roberts g step ups. Cant remember the last time i surfed the 6'6, i think a few years ago in Australia. Still want to keep it though.

i currently don't have anything that could qualify as a even a step-up poke

really should get in touch with Russell Hoyte and get a step up of this 5'8 which handles anything i can scratch into.

Interesting thread.

I'm wanting to get into bigger surf. The problem is, board wise, I don't know where to start. Multiple waves within a 5 mile radius of my house that will call for more board this winter, but each of these waves pretty much seem like it needs a different style board.

More confusing is when you start to see what guys are riding where.

For instance, from what I'm reading younger guys don't seem to go greater than 7'0 at macking Pipe. 6'6 seems to be common. Not that it matters to a mortal like myself.

Then there's OH Blacks... where a something in the 9'0 range seems to fit the bill. wave2

be honest with your abilities, align yourself with people of seemingly similar skill, and talk to your shaper(s)

wave2

a pro can ride a 5'10 shortboard at second/third reef pipe. not the wisest board choice but if they are in the right place at the right time it's highly doable.

Pros don't ride 5'10s at Second Reef Pipe. I saw JOB's quiver at the Tokoro factory. He rides 6'3's to 7'0. He has bigger boards for Sunset and Waimea. And a really really big board for Peahi. The thing that was interesting was how much volume Wade packed into the step ups. I forgot the numbers but the boards were pretty thick in the middle tapering to the rails. They still looked like blades. Here's a Surfline feature from 2014.

http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/fresh-batch-jamie-obrien-wade-tokoro_106062/

Most of the rippers at Big Bowl ride boards under 6'0, no matter how big it gets. They say the board fits into the curve of the wave easier. It's pretty much a slab. And with the shorter length less board to get foam balled. I ride a 6'4 to 6'8 just for paddling in. The last swell I surfed my 5'10 and there were some doh sets. All the drops were late and some were air drops. The advantage was able to change direction quicker and more finesse on stalls. But Pipe is a much different animal.

perhaps my post wasn't clear.. i wasn't suggesting pros commonly ride 5'10s at second reef pipe whatsoever, i was just saying it has and can be done on a roll-in. others are way out there super deep on 8-9fters.. all depends what you are looking for and how you like to approach a particular wave/session. given one's ability is sufficient, the possibilities are vast. i guess that's what i was alluding to.

6`10" 19" 2 5/8" with Lord Shreddingtons pad placement. Its a Webber from the late 90s I think. My friend got it in 1999-2000 used, so it was probably a few years old already. I got it off him last year. A bit of a banana rocker. Only ridden in one time last season I had to paddle out from the next beach and sat way further out than usual. Its a nice board cus I never fall using it, it sorta goes in a more steady way than other boards. It also paddles really well. Have yet to turn it, probably gotta change the pad further back for that to happen helmet

Russell Hoyte step-up, resin-x / eps. Rides like a shortboard, but can has that extra paddle. Late, steep drops into "need to run fast NOW" sections are another strong point.

I love that board. Wish I had the chance to ride it more often at home.

The guy is a legend. Only hand shapes. He shapes some amazing guns. Not that I want anything with that but I was tripping on some 10'6s he had sitting in his shaping room last time I went there. Only problem is he still didn't finish my 6'0 I ordered a year ago frown

that 6`7" has to be the worst looking board ever. I would doubt even Greg would make such a abomination for the surfshop racks. Must be a custom, yes?

Another argument to letting the shaper do the designing.

Now there's a micro-brewery that shares the parking lot (maybe it's been there for a while. I haven't). Beer and a rack full of Bonzers would be a bad combo for me. "Hey, I really need this Bumble Bee".

It is a singularly great shop.

Definitely no bonus points for me, on this pic......

These are all headed to Northern California, and I wanted to get a pic before they got boxed up and shipped.

Hard to tell the scale, with no one in the pic, but the orange Padillac on the right is 7'6 and the Crazy Train with black rails on the far left is 9'6......... socrazy

cheers

I worked with the guys over at the Stretch shop to help me out with this board (my first big wave board). Stretch's first comment to me was, "Foam is your friend" - after bouncing a few ideas back and forth (more so me learning a ton from him) we settled on the Buzzgun - 9' x 22" x 3.75.

The board has been name 'dreamsicle' :

toddmanley - I'll join the chorus here - really like this board, would love more pics.

Curious about your size / age, if you care to share, as this board looks just right for me - love it!

Also love to hear ride report, if you've had it out yet.

thanks for posting that

I'll try to get some more pics up tonight. As for myself - 6'9", 230lbs, 43 yrs old - I've taken this out a couple of times but haven't really been in anything bigger than head high for me (OH for others!).

Those came out killer!
Nice to see my handy-work at the end of the production line.
Not only do they look good, they all felt killer under my arm !

That Buzz gun is rad, Toddmanley.

Nice work as always Oak.

I really do think that the big wave boards look better than any other type of surfboard. I wish I had the balls to own and ride them.

Thanks for the pics toddmanley! Super interested in this one; I just picked up a 7'8 off CL that I think has some similar characteristics. Glassed at the stretch shop coincidentally but not shaped by him-not a buzz gun or even a Stretch at all. Although the bottom contours are more subtle, it has a similar soft v/roll in the front, and v out the back (looks like yours is kinda scooped out into a double though)? Mine's a twinzer.
Good luck with the duck dives!

I have a 8'2" x 20.50" x 3+" Buzzgun (pu/epoxy) on order for me at 5'9" x 160# x 57 years. I will NOT be touching it's max wave size range but will enjoy feeling comfortable when the playing field gets bigger here in SF this winter. I have a number of Stretchs from 5'8" to 6'8 and they all get into waves sooo easily. I'm counting on this one to do the same.

Of course I may have to head south with it for the next head high swell at Swamis too.

Getting major buzz gun envy! We surf the same spot and are around the same size... though I'm about half your age jam_on

How'd you end up at those dims? Thinking of ordering one for next season (already) but was thinking more in the 7' range.

All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine...

Nothing too scientific. I sized up some other boards in that range and tweaked the width to my comfort zone. I didn't go bigger because a) I still need an excuse to not paddle out on certain days and b) this length seems pretty versatile.
I don't really feel my age until I try to track down those long period swells. I need a lot of glide.

Good looking boards Wayne.
That black and yellowish board is a thing of beauty.
Is the one with curved lines stringers or pinlines?
Who shaped that Bolt board?

I gained weight, lost surf and gym time, but still want to get some waves. This is for out front, Overhead, and Big Drakes, 3rd reef Rincon, wherever goes off.

Then there is this 9'0"
 photo bg_deck_s.jpg

This 9'6"
 photo bg_bottom_s.jpg

This 8'2" was recently redone by a friend who didn't like it, so I grabbed it. The original one went to the east coast with basswave.

Then there is this. 5'6".

I'll probably just watch a lot and lie to all of you.

Dammmm, that AG double ender would be perfect for the Overhead!

Lemme know if you feel like getting rid of the red Bonzer. Maybe even trade? wink2

I sold that red one to basswave, then bought a copy off of it from a buddy from Oxnard Shores. I'm keeping it.
The double ender may go up for trade. It's a bit much foam for me.

Beautiful board Stu - great score! jam_on

Thanks for the kind words, and again, it was great having you come down to get your board and spend a little time.

I swear my heart starts beating a little faster every time I'm around these types of boards - especially when I pick them up and put 'em under my arm...........can't even imagine....

Definitely no bonus points for me, on this pic......

These are all headed to Northern California, and I wanted to get a pic before they got boxed up and shipped.

Hard to tell the scale, with no one in the pic, but the orange Padillac on the right is 7'6 and the Crazy Train with black rails on the far left is 9'6......... socrazy

cheers

So my shaper has had two big boards shaped for himself that he's never ridden. a 6'9" and a 6'10". Since he's out of the water for 3 months and they've been sitting there a year he old them to my brother for cheap. My brother gave me the 6'10" and I drove North today.

So I buy my brother a surfboard and he breaks it first time out. @trsurfboards 6'10"

A photo posted by @bobbykeys on

Didn't really need the length today but man was having all that rail line nice. It's like cheating with how easy it is compared to the 5'11" I ended up riding the second half of my session.

5 waves and broken. 2 were in the excellent range though. Back to watching for deals on step ups.

Purchased an 8'6" Strive gun on CL that I thought would last me through the winter. I was wrong and broke it during last week's run of swell. Luckily there was a stock Buzz Gun just being finished up...

8'0 x 20" x 3.25"

Board looks crazy and rides like silk. Truly does ride like a board much shorter (I did some turns this weekend) and paddles like one a foot longer. The extreme vee has a unique feeling when paddling that I can't really describe, but it's awesome. Gets in so early and goes... ultra confidence inspiring. Thanks stretch crew!!!

All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine...

My shaper TR is being cool and offering a deal on a new board. Should I get an exact copy of the 6'10 I broke a few posts up since it felt really good. Or should I get a 6'8" since my next board down is a 5'11". Which is a better gap? The board would be for double overhead beachbreak in the Oxtura area.

Just met up with Raz yesterday (NK surfboards) and will be picking up a 6'11" pintail
6-channel from him once there are quad trailers added. It was his personal, shaped
for a Bali trip. Pretty sure I'll only ever use it at Blacks, but will be good to have on
hand 'just in case' El Nino comes through.

I'd go with the 6'10" considering how much water can be moving around at said location. Years ago I picked up my MC Bonzer round pin @ 6'11" (I know, crazy Malcolm measurements grin2), for just that reason and have not been disappointed. In fact, rode it this morning and was stocked to have the extra paddle power. jam_on

top was a 7'2" custom arakawa ordered in August. caught inside at sunset on my very first session on the board; never found the nose. that place eats boards.

bottom is a 7'6" i picked up used on Oahu. excellent paddler/wave catcher and it actually turns nicely for its size. it's for Blacks and was shaped by a local guy on Oahu.

eric arakawa has his own set of futures fines that are quad specific so i went with those and the fins felt good to me.

as an aside, eric arakawa really runs one of the most professional custom order experiences i've used. he started with an intake form and insisted on personally talking through the board with me on the phone; asking a lot of good questions and giving me input on the board given what i wanted it for and my experience level. he also went out of his way when i picked the board up to chat with me and really put a very pleasant, personal touch on the entire process.

that 7'2" looked insane and i should have snapped a picture of it but i was frothing to get out in the water.

Murray Bourton Reef Swallow

6'6 x 19 1/2 x 2 11/16 - 34L

Pinched rails, lots of tail rocker, conservative entry.

Christened at very bloody solid Lennox Head on Marvellous Monday 6 June. This thing is a race horse: knifey, precise, very positive; don't think I've ever gone faster, but then the waves were unreal...

I can't recommend him enough; an absolute pleasure to deal with. He obviously knows what he's talking about, and has a very good way of communicating.

All aspects of the design are discussed, and he sends you the file so that you can check all dims; this is an iterative process. I was keen on a 5-fin option and a little extra paddling foam, so he widened the tail (and therefore also the nose) slightly and put extra meat down the centre of the board while keeping the rails thin.

He was careful to add that some find swallows too stiff, and that the pronounced tail rocker (2 7/8"!) balanced that. Music to my ears, as I was after drive and hold, plus the easier entry into large, hollow waves afforded by the rocker.

We agreed that with the hold of the thin swallow would allow you to use slightly smaller fins, so med AMs were the call.

The board feels sleek, but has float and paddle power. I very different feel just sitting on it or paddling around the lineup. Not corky, but still substantial, if you get my drift.

Just wanted to sing the praise of this board, and Murray Bourton, once more.

I don't surf this board often - maybe 10 or 15 times a year - but when I do, it's special.

While it's made for clean Indo waves, I surfed it today in very solid 30kt onshore beach break. A narrow bay, which somehow turns absolute howling onshore dog shit into the odd gem.

Undergunned at times, but the feeling of knifing into a large wave on this board is incredible. For the size of waves, I should have been on my 6'10 Desert Storm, but a lot of duckdiving ruled it out.

The G is 61 18 3/4 2 3/8 and the Lynch is 64 18 3/4 2 3/8. The Roberts has been a staple in my quiver for a long time now, difference from previous board is this one has slightly more volume and 5 fin. The lynch was a Craigslist score and pretty damn bullet proof with lockbox fins. Havent gotten to ride this version of the Roberts (that hopefully changes tomorrow) and the lynch I had a good solo session on it at a pretty solid outer bar, but should be even better with more suitable fins I attained since then thanks to a generous errber.

Nice one, Dyl. Always liked the look of those F-Rockets.

Do you ever end up totally paralysed by the extent of your quiver, to the point that you can't choose? :-)

I do take longer than I should going through the racks in the garage deciding which boards to pack the car with. Then sometimes I think about the one or two I left in the garage that I wish I had brought, lol! banghead

Love the look of those F-Rockets.

Thinking about one as a step up/east coast winter board.

What do you think the lower end of the range is for something like a 6'2 F-Rocket? Would it be the wrong choice for slightly overhead barreling beach break with some push in full rubber, boots, gloves, hood? Want to add some glide and reach without adding too much length or going to a narrow nosed step up. Would also come in handy for hurricanes and travel.

This will hopefully work as a step-up for me when my 5'11 Fever is maxed out at the S. Bay beaches (waiting for the tide to drop today to give it a go). Good CL find/deal at $260. This was Cordell's board that he gave to a Newport auction and had a pretty big paint-penned bunny on the bottom that Cordy's daughter drew on it, which came off cleanly with some non-acetone nail polish remover. The guy who won it is 5'6 140 pounds and never rode it. Dims are: 6'3" x 18 3/4" x 2 3/8". I'm 6' 175

I was reminded today why the G step up is my favorite board in my quiver at a left breaking rivermouth. First wave, brand new board but it felt like an old friend cookin

Rob worked hard on that board. I have all these dated folders as the file/board was tweaked, adjusted and tuned, over and over and over...

Rusty makes very nice guns.

I tried to embed as per SBD's instructions, but failed miserably.

Sorry guys, I was practising, and ended up posting that Arakawa Insta post. Which has nothing to do with our thread.

And now I can't delete it, haha!

Not a bad idea. The 62 is fun at 5-7ft. beachbreaks when I want to get in earlier than my round tail shortboard would let me. Theres less rocker than the outline would suggest and theres plenty of thickness in the center along the stringer to help with paddling

It certainly shows. Not many boards you can get on with no transition feelings. Surfed it again today; bigger, gnarlier and was glad to have a good board under my feet.

Any of you ever order a gun from Rusty?

I've become very curious. His guns look absolutely incredible, and he seems like a really nice guy. I have a strict rule to never order boards from arseholes.

I take off pretty far to the right of the screen, my buddy tries to shoulder hop me, I make it pretty far to the left of the screen, then dive off in the soup.

first wave on the board and first wave of the session. got several "nice wave"s on the way back out and had my pick the rest of the sesh.

That looks nice GG.

I am a swallow tail fan in my smaller boards. getting a new step up and am leaning towards a swallow over round pin.

In your opinion, what makes you prefer a swallow over a round or pin for bigger waves?

Here's another

At large wave speeds you get all the release you need + additional drive , support and looseness from these tails compared to Round Pins .

Why would you want additional drive on a large wave?

Also isnt too much release on big waves a bad thing?

I like the feel of swallows in solid waves, but on proper guns go for rounded pins purely for safety reasons.

Guns with swallows look so good, though.

I think you have made a very good point regarding Greg's statement about extra release and drive. I have not owned a board that long, but to put that particular example into context I would say at that length and that width of tail its not going to make a great deal of difference whether it is a small swallow or a small square tail or even rounded tail.

I once had a 7' 4" gun shaped by Wayne Lynch (bought in the early 90s), it had a small square tail which was popular on that sort of board at the time. I don't think I would have noticed what sort of tail was on it in the waves I used it in. I don't have use for such a board any more as I am no longer willing to frighten myself and don't have the paddling stamina of my early 30s.

This morning it was well overhead and I got thrashed on my 5' 6" Chilli, came in with my tail between my legs without getting one wave laugh A bigger board would not have helped, swirling open ocean beachbreak currents and only possible to surf the inner bar with rips travelling up the face of the wave. Funny yesterday at the same place, much the same size except looking much more horrible from an onshore wind I had a great time on the same board and it was possible to surf the outer bar - wind must have been helping me get in early or something or maybe the swell was softer, I don't know. When I say great time I had 4 or 5 waves. I am tiring too, day 3 of the long weekend surfing twice a day. One more day to go for me, I will choose easy option this evening and tomorrow laugh

If I think I need something bigger than my 6' 3" I don't go out nowadays. Apologies for digression this post would be better off in the community surf report thread.

read this again :

At large wave speeds you get all the release you need + additional drive , support and looseness from these tails compared to Round Pins .

You get all the release you need at those higher speeds, extra lessens the higher end capability + a few other unwanted things .

Slowly squared tail and swallows are appearing on big wave boards .

I am reading it over and over trying to understand. How do you define drive? Doesnt drive have less to do with tail type than other factors like bottom contour and rocker?

Templates have the same design as Rocker , just more .

Lift that last 12" up to create the pin tail , thats a lot of release , more than needed

Winning board

I am unable to comprehend what you are saying. You're posting style is very odd.

Template is a big part of the release in a board .

At Large wave speeds less release is required since the angles release more , Rocker and Template .

Round Pins reduce area radically , Swallows , Square tails are more inline with whats needed reducing this area at those speeds .

I understood it. You get enough release from wave speed already so no need to pull the tail in to a pin. leaving it as a swallow gives more drive, due to the straighter template through the last 12 inches. Drive is exactly what you need in big wave boards to transfer wave speed into down the line speed to clear long sections.

Thanks GG

Speaking of tail templates, I remember watching a video of Rusty Preisendorfer talking about different tail shapes, while laying out his templates on a blank and drawing the outline.

Can't for the life of me find it, but would appreciate the link if any of you can.

GG, are your proper guns flat bottomed too? Curious to know.
