Ive heard multiple sources state that a round pin is "driveyer" than a squash. What is your definition of drive?

Drivey=speed

A wider tailed board will always be faster

...but...

If you are going too fast you will lose control.
So on a larger, more powerful and or faster wave, a rounded tail might hold traction better rather than just sliding out.
So you would be putting that speed to use, rather than just skipping along the surface.
So it might be technically "slower" but you would have more traction and control making you faster.

situations where you don't need to generate speed as much as harness it?

Imagine a mini simmons surfing sunset lol

Way more than multiple sources promoted the use of nylon fins in the 90's .

This is my view on the topic as well. Although I think drive and speed aren't exactly the same thing. What about lift and thrust?

disagree, drive is more projection...covering distance.

speed is how fast you cover that distance.

Think of gears, on a bike.
1st gear is reactive, quick to get up to speed, but than lacks drive, you can peddle hard, but 1 big peddle in 5th gear will project you further

the whole thing gets more complicated when you add grip and release.

that's like changing the tires to suit the surface. You might think the least resistance will be the fastest, but if you don't have the grip, you are sliding out and no longer covering any ground.

Like a blind man at an orgie, I was gonna have to feel my way around.

drive is transforming the forward/downhill movement of a wave into lateral projection down the line.
