I have to get glasses my vision is 20/40 in one eye and 20/50 in the other. I wouldnt be worried about this if I didn't surf but since I do I might have to get Contacts the only problem is I don't want the contacts effing up my vision by cutting my eye duck diving or getting sucked over the falls . Anyone have any suggestions or just not wear them in powerful waves?Any pro surfers have bad vision?

I have bad vision (I cannot remember the # exactly, but it is something like 20/one-or-two-hundred-something) and wear contacts surfing. I have lost maybe two over the past 10 years. Your eye doc can hook you up with cheap disposables; you lose one, and it costs you something like 5 bucks. Your vision might even be good enough to surf without vision correction.

20/50 and you're wearing contacts while surfing? I use to surf w/o contacts when I could only see the big letter "E" on the eye chart. No problems missing waves coming in. Couldn't make out the details of other people in the line up, but that's no big deal. Currently, I wear contacts while surfing. Only had a couple problems where sand got into them. Had to go in and clean them....no big deal. One draw back is not being able to open your eyes underneath the water. If you keep your eyes closed they will not get sucked out.

Alternative - get the laser surgery.

Do you currently have a problem seeing things while surfing? If not, don't wear contacts or glasses while surfing and if I were you, I'd get glasses, not contacts, and only wear them when they're really needed. Optometry is a huge racket and once you go down that road, you'll get more and more dependent on glasses/contacts, but there's never any discussion about IMPROVING your eyesight, other than maybe through surgery.

It is possible, however, to improve your eyesight without surgery. I used to be completely dependent on glasses/contacts and now it's been almost ten years since I've worn anything. I learned from the guy who runs this center: http://www.nvcsf.com/. But there's lots of other people around doing the same basic thing.

If you can surf okay now without glasses, just keep going. The nearsighted/farsighted thing makes a huge difference. Certain conditions (especially glare) can affect you, but maybe they aready do. If you mostly need glasses to read printed material and street signs, well, that won't affect you much in the water.

Thanks guys I have problems on land but never in the Water. I can be on a sandbar like 200 yards from shore and see people pretty well. I have problems reading things though.

your vision when while surfing does slightly improve due to the water reflecting light. another draw back of not have corrected vision while surfing is when it's overcast or at dusk. Tough to see at those times. Sounds like you need glasses more for driving.

My vision is 20/40 in one eye, and 20/60 in the other. I wear glasses pretty much full-time, except for surfing, and I have no problem with it. Only time it's an issue at all is when it's really foggy, or the light is really low (pre-dawn or twilight sessions).

I've dabbled with using contacts, but to me it's more trouble than it's worth. Maybe one of these days I'll give laser a try....when they have a lot more cases under their belts. I'm not anxious to risk the vision I have now.

My friend used to surf with his in but he kept losing them. They would also irritate his eyes too. Your vision doenst sound that bad you can probably surf without them.
