Personally, I think it would be more dignified to just surf naked rather than wedge a piece of string up your ass crack.

Go ahead and call me a prude, but thongs are just gross. The very idea makes me physically uncomfortable. And when I see a 13 or 14-year-old girl running around in what looks uncomfortably like stripper wear, it makes me kind of sad.

I would be fine if everyone just surfed naked, but it seems kind of painful. And rashes and bruises aren't all that sexy, unless you're into that kind of thing.

After all of the words you've spent, lamenting on how you and your friends have been judged, based on your attire and appearances.

Huh?

And my mind is slightly blown that thongs could be considered comfortable and functional. Although I guess it makes sense that they would stay on better in the water.

As far as using sex to market women's surfing . . . I get if from a marketing perspective, but I still think it's lame and f*cked up, especially when we're talking about really young girls, but then again I hate the whole idea of pro surfing in general so maybe I'm not the one to ask.

. . . and your little dog, too!

I think by now we've established that I'm the resident Grinch in all this and that most posters think I should just mind my own business and let these teenagers (and their parents) do as they see fit. Live and let live.

But FTR I also get pissed when parents laugh it off when their boys egg cars driving down the street or tag schools or the like. Get off my lawn.

I think for a lot of people those are a completely different type of issue from thong bikini bottoms. Perhaps that's where the disagreement begins?

From living near the beach in Huntington/Newport, having eyes, and discussions with daughters aged 21 and 17, these are my thong observations:

1. It's very rare for a high school-aged girl to walk around in public in a thong bathing suit (especially 16 and under), at least around here.

2. It is not that rare for a young adult female to do so.

3. Currently, the majority of females under 30 (and many over that age) now wear thong underwear due to comfort and style, the latter being the lack of VPL ("visible panty lines").

Do you mind me asking how you segue into this conversation with your daughters? What was your line?

I just ask them. It comes from a lifetime of being able to talk about most things with them. As far as regulation goes, when they are under 18 they aren't allowed to wear thongs in public (not that it's been an issue), get any tats, or get piercings not previously approved. After 18, it is up to them, but I hope that our parenting has helped them to make good choices in those and other areas of life.

Is this circle-jerk of a thread still going on?

Jesus H Christ!

And, are you completely obtuse? (yes, this is an ad hominem).

What part of pimping-out-youth-by-marketing/surfwear-companies (or any other form of marketing) don't you get?

It sells. If it didn't sell, it wouldn't be happening.

Get over it, already.

You may be missing my point it seems.
There are PLENTY of parents that totally disagree with you.

Didn't miss the point, nor do I disagree with your observation. The conclusion you draw from that observation doesn't work, though.

There are plenty of parents who beat their kids in public, too; but many people still seem to get upset about that when they see it. So that would be an example of a community expressing an interest in the kids welfare that is in addition to the parental interests. Which relates to this thread in the form of the question: "Do we as a community have any social interest WRT the manner in which kids are raised?" Clearly we have passed laws that say yes, so what remains is where lies that line between an appropriate concern vs unwarranted meddling?

The point is that "parents do this" is a fallacious premise.
You are ignoring that in your quest to validate your ad hominem.

Quote:

The whole "have you had the experience" query is not my way of trying to prevail over you or suggest that parents are somehow more virtuous than non-parents, as your rebuttal seem to be directed at. What I am suggesting is that if you haven't had the experience of staying up all night awaiting the safe return of a kid from some party you might not believe how sincere some of us are about being concerned for their well being. That you seem to have so little empathy for that experience illustrates that point perfectly.

Nope, that's not it at all.
You are still making an ad hominem, by asserting that i am implying anyone is insincere or that i lack empathy.
You are also ignoring how that experience makes you myopic, not me.

Quote:

Your whole "blame the victim" thing might be relevant if we were talking about what adults are wearing, except that we're not. When people criticize the Honey Boo Boo thing nobody is blaming her; they're blaming the mom. Who is not the victim.

Nope, because you would be "blaming" the child for the behavior of pedophiles.
Would you tell a son not to wear skinny jeans because "OH NOEZ, PAEDO RAPE"?

Assholier than thou.

I get what you are saying, as well as stpchsfsf, but I'm still not going to pay for any thongs or tats or pageants.

How about some skinny jeans for your son?
Or a Bieber haircut?
There are rapists out there after all!!!

Who is talking about rapists?

What about just acting classy? At any age?

Okay. Simple question, if you had a 12 year old daughter and she wanted a thong and a tattoo and to be in a pageant, would you pay for that and be okay with that?

Your ad hominem, is ad nauseum, and ipso facto, ab initio, fallacious.
