What EXACTLY is an 80's board?

Full rail thruster, 6ft or less with a wider nose and tail?

throw in flat to vee or just flat...maybe a slightly sharper rail, multiple logo placments...cancaer that somehow never seems to add up to serious damage or delam

Surfboards Hawaii twin fin by Mike Slingerland.

Dick Brewer twin fin by Gary Linden '82.

It's Jersey, hence Uncle John's IROC.

If I had kept those shoes, I could have sold them to a Hipster for $200, today.

The 80's were kinda cool for boards.

80-81 I rode a twin, then back to a 5'7 single fin with six channels by Cino. Had a 6'0 single step up by Rick(?) Irons.

82 first thruster HIC 5'7 squash by Gabe Garduque it was a Ray Almony team trade in. Opened up a whole new world.

My first custom thruster was a Straight Up by Kim Purrington, a full on Curren inspired bump squash. Super good board.

After that I worked at Local Motion and rode all kinds of boards. Sting thrusters by Rawson. Bonzer bottom thrusters by Rawson and Steve Wilson. Ron Roush shaped a demo epoxy I had for a few weeks. Louie Ferreira, Charlie Smith, Dave Hill, Chuck Andrus, Buddy Dumphy, Diff. Got a couple of magic boards from Ronnie Woodward. Tried lots of team trade-ins, Merricks, Rusty, Maurice Cole.

The 80's were fun until it wasn't.

Started riding Tokoros in the 80's.

gota 7'0 roush 80's single fin in the rafters right now...hell of a flat rocker making for the fastest "fun gun" type thing i've ever seen. havent had it in anything serious other than slightly overhead south walls...but man she flies like a bat out of hell. turns....eh..it gets by.....but she FLIES!

There were a couple others that I rode because of the surf shop.

Heitor Fernandez, Gordon Quigg, Reno.

Reno was working with carbon strips on the rails and woven in the glass to manipulate flex.

Dave Hill and Charlie Smith were also doing windsurfers and incorporating the bottoms and fin knowledge into much slower surfboards. Dave shaped me a board with a concave deck and bottom.

The Bonzer brothers did stuff for LoMo. Duncan used to walk around in 90 degree Hawaiian heat in shorts and a trench coat. They taught the LoMo shapers about the Bonzer bottoms.

My sister just saw Ron Roush. He's in Hawaii shaping. It's amazing he can shape so well with that artificial arm.

Ron owed a glass shop some money back in the early 90's. Jeannie called to tell me call the glass shop and listen to the message. I think it was Kimo Greene. The message was leave a message but if this is Ron Roush I have your shaping arm and you're not getting it back 'til you pay me.

1981 Murray Bourton Pipedream six channel, pintail single.
1982 McCoy lazor zap single.
1983 Energy Simon Anderson thruster squash tail.
1984 Aloha Greg Clough thruster squash tail
1985-8 Kent Manning six channel swallow tail thrusters
1988 Outer Island deep single concave squah tail thruster
1989-94 Burning spears Al Byrne six channel and single/dbl (if memory serves) swallow and squash tail thrusters.
What a decade.
Easy to timeline my boards from then as I only had one board at a time and would ride it in everything.
In the latter part of the decade started going to Fiji and Indo so the one board quiver blew out to two with the addition of a gun.
Wish I still had the lazor zap and the Energy thruster. Both worth a pretty penny now.

THE CHRISTIAN FLETCHER-2

Model comes with a single to double vee off the tail and is designed with a semi 80's outline with the center wide point a little further back. It has a semi pulled in nose and full tail outline and a low full rail.

I had a hand me down Brewer from my Dad's friend in '75. It had Upturned rails, I think it was a little over 7 feet. Sucked at Kalamas where we were learning to surf but when I took it out to some of the more open faced Eastside spots thing flew. It was in mint condition. Wish I still had that one.

A neighbor had a 6'4 Walden that I got for a bag of weed. That was my first shortboard.

My first new board was in '78 or 79 a 6'6 T&C double stringer swallow shaped by Glenn Minami. Bright yellow with green between the stringer. Got it for $150 with a leash, wax and a yellow T&C tshirt. Wish I still had that shirt the board too.

I didn't surf good enough in the 70's for it to be as close to my heart as the 80's. Plus it was full of grommet hood terror from the older meaner rippers.

Before I left Hawaii in 74 surfing was allot different allot more experimental.

All I remember of T&C back then was Craig selling wax in a little hole in the wall store (7/11 these days?) across the Monkey Bar in Pearl City. Wax and Shorts was all he had back then no boards. Bolt, Surfline, G&S and Country Surfboards Haleiwa where the labels of choice back then.

My cousins Brian Hamilton and Kimo Farm always had the state of the art equipment.

Kimo grad in the early 70's from Punahou around the same age as Gerry and always got customs from Brewer because of that.

One day he showed up with this experimental winged swallow tail that Brewer was fooling around with Owl with

It was the first "tri-fin" I ever saw with two little half moon fins on the swallow tails behind the singlet with a concave bottom. I think someone calls them "Reverse Thrusters" these days. This was before Simon showed up here with his thruster.
But as it was lightening bolt/Parrish beak nose days a wing swallow wide and stubby with a concave and not vee bottom was like looking at a spacecraft.

I think Griffin has an old brewer template of a similar design that MR got from brewer.

Anyway after working all summer at the Pineapple Cannery I took all my earnings and went down to Iggy at the Surfboard Shaping Company in Pearl City and ordered my own version. It was one of the best boards I ever had back then seemed so far ahead of its time eventhough guys in my neighborhood were already making experimental superlight 4-5lb "thruster" shapes just with one fin.
Of course they didn't last too long with just one layer of glass and no real hotcoat so that you were kind of like riding on a weave of glass. But this was like 71-72

I think the bump squash, beefy/boxy rails and triplane rocker was big in the 80's. Seems like Rusty'd Occy Board and MR twins were the rage.

Mike Croteau was sent back to the mainland by RB with Jim Mizel to make Dick Brewer surfboards .

Jim had RB's first wing swallow , it was 6'4".

It had a concave tail and was a Tri Fin with a very small fin behind the center fin in the concave , 4 fins .

That board was amazing .

Sick boards in this thread. Every once in awhile I see a noob or a tourist with a sick looking 80's stick and I've been tempted to offer money.

I'd love to ride a well shaped 80's stub (OG) to see how it goes.

I learned to surf in the mid 90s (middle school age) and first board was an 80s garage sale special "Impact" board with neon colors and probably 6'0 x 19.5 x 2.5 ish. A couple months into it I decided I wanted to rip and the surf shop employee talked me into a used 5'11 x 17.5 x 2 rockered out sinker
Luckily took a dive skating down to the beach and broke all the fins off of it and ruined the bottom after a couple months of flapping and went back to the Impact
80s boards were great!

My buddy collects 80's boards and offers money to these people all the time. More often than not he walks away with an insane board for not that much coin.

I haven't been over to his house in awhile, but he had to have had 20+ 80's boards, last time I was there - most of which were water-tight and he was riding them.

I've always wanted to take a quiver shot of him and the boards, but have never done it........maybe this thread will be my motivation......

About 4 yrs ago I had the misfortune of being a trailer park maintenance man in Escondidio (between jobs) and one day while walking around this shithole I spotted this 80's Ripcurl thruster with an insane airbrush, under this carport rigged to be a garage. It had to have been a Peter St. Pierre/ Moonlight glassed board because I know they were doing them at the time it was shaped. It had blue rails fade to yellow and orange with some geometricshit going on. The thing was rad and I kick myself in the ass everytime I think about how I sould have knocked and offered them $40 bucks for it.

I miss my old office, then came the kids.

First board, 5'8 Lance custom 1985. 2nd board, 6'1 Willis I got for my birthday out of Encinitas Surfboards in 1988?

Both going in the grave with me.

Per the website:
"One man's exploration of the 'innovation period' of surfboard design from 1975 to 1985 or 'how a bunch of old surfboards saved my life."

It's a great blog from someone who collects a TON of boards. His descriptions of the shapes and the theories behind them, and ride reports, have helped me understand what's going on with the boards I ride and what I do or don't like in a shape. Can't recommend this blog highly enough and even though I didn't start following because I liked boards from that era (I was born towards the end of it), it's the first one I click on in my RSS feed.

Now that I've typed this much, I can't stop thinking about what this blog taught me or led me into researching: the influence of the no-nose Lazer Zap in design history, how bottom contours are what makes a good twin fin, the ideas behind bumped tails, and most fascinating was how the debates about 1, 2, 3, or 4 fins played out back in the day. The kicker: the same ideas that were being debated about all of these design attributes are again relevant today!

In short, surf that guy's blog and read every post.

...the last board on the g&s page...Hank Warner shaped some of those in '85-'86 for g&s. I loved that board. Awesome grovel board. Had so much fun switching the trailer fins.

I like that site also. That guy has had some of the best looking 80s era boards, including a couple that have major historical value behind them than most other sites. I take mild issue with the created era.."innovation period." Surfing as we know it is very young. Much of what was learned in that period is still being used, reused or refined. That entire period lasted about 12 years, but innovation has been an ongoing thing in surfing since it first started. Kind of makes it seem a long time ago when it was really a very short time ago.

The Lazor Zaps main contribution to modern surfing was the plan shape. Simon put three fins on that plan shape and what Cheyne and Geoff had been looking for...a board that would be stable like a single and loose like a twin, where you stood on the tail and didn't have to move around on the board.... became the thruster. It might be one of the ultimate best single fin designs ever along with it's variants.

There are plenty of other valid and fun designs which do not follow this formula. In fact, of late, I sort of hate calling anything retro as most everything in surfing has it roots in something else. Each craftsman sort of does it own thing. Makes choosing a shaper fun.

Surfings biggest issue has always been putting too much emphasis on what pros or elite surfers ride or even their opinions. Most are born with their talent. What feels one way to them will be totally different for your average surfer. They make everything they ride look good. Hard not to appreciate some of that talent though. Slater, Kerr, Parko, John John and Gabriel among many others are marvels to behold.

80s boards worked well. They were wide enough, floated well and were snappy.

I"m about to sell a couple of my personal Zappers. One vintage the other a personal board. Pm me if anyone has an interest.

My very first and I still have her!

6-4" thruster from Ken Freeland, apparently a shaper from Jeffrey's Bay. Can't even recall where I picked up or from whom.

On the bottom it says

6'4", F-749, K.F.

Picked it up sometime around '90 I think?

More Big Logos... 1982 pau surf @ Maili Pt on my team HIC thruster by Cino. Might have been a Jeannie Chesser airbrush too. Built at the long gone BOWS (Board of water supply) factory behind the Ford dealership in Aiea. IIRC that one was 5'8 x 19 x verythick

Have had this little 80's board for a while. $75 yard sale find. As you can tell it gets ridden a lot. I just blew the fin off it this weekend so it's getting lokbox'd and I'll be able to travel with it then.

I just picked this up for an upcoming Nicaragua trip. Thanks to SlicedFeet for the inspiration for this 80s tribute spray. Jim Dunlop really knocked it out of the park with this one.

That's a whole lotta V.
Now how's about a full quiver pic for the 2016 quiver thread?

Actually it was the Seasoned (Virginia Beach?) and WRV and Fox (Both Hatteras?) that jumped out at me. Of the board labels you posted I have a Seasoned, Fox and a Natural Art. The early 80s Fox I have I'd rate as a 9 out of 10.

The pink one between the Seasoned and Lightning Bolt - In the Eye?

I’m just here to drink some beer and ride high volume boards.

Ocean Avenue surfboards was located in Melbourne beach Florida. I think they were Fox before that. Jeff Klugel was a shaper, I think Dylan Graves (PR Pro) dad may have been an part owner if I remember correctly.
I've seen those boards on Craigslist Rat Red. Are you the guy selling them all the time or buying them up?
Nice board Jimmy D shaped you btw!

My glass slipper was an Ocean Ave. Second board after years on the Slingerland Surfboards Hawaii twin. Not so good in mush or crowds; as soon as it was chest high on an 11 year old, game on.

Looks fun, I got a few Dunlops in the 5'9"-11" range. But that's a pretty damn good deal. I'll point a few guys to your post.
