was towing behind my pit on monday and she bumped me off at full speed, i went flying and slid pretty good on the road. got some bumps and cuts on my hands, sides, shoulder, but lost the most skin on my knee. been putting some anti bacterial gel on it but its still pretty raw.

if the surf comes up tomorrow, should i surf or is the risk of infection or staph not worth it ? ill be in trunks........

I wouldn't go out near river mouths or lagoons. And if you're in CA, and it rains as forecasted, I would stay out for a bit. Had a few friends get staph this year, it's no fun.

I had a bruise & scab combo on my left knee from falling through a floor in the Philippines. Epic swell hit, couldn't stay out of the water. Ten days later I was in the worst pain I had ever experienced- couldn't eat, couldn't walk, couldn't even get a hard-on to bang the girl who was taking care of me Flew back to the states with wheelchair escorts the whole way. Ended up having a hockey puck worth of flesh excavated from my knee (not an exaggeration), an 8 day hospital stay and a $21,000 bill. Could have a heck of a lot worse.

I did get the wave of my life that I think about every day, so no regrets

Always wondered who are the tweakers getting towed behind their pit bulls. Tell us about yourself.

Fell down drunk on Sat night before Halloween and gashed my finger on broken beer bottle. Cleaned it up and kept partying. Surfed sun afternoon with my kid and my hand bandaged. Come Thursday night pain was a constant throbbing. Ended up in ER on sat morning with super swollen hand and got 2 bags of iv. 6 weeks and several visits to hand specialist later I can almost make a complete fist without pain. Just played the drums last night for first time (longest break in 10+ years).

I'd stay out of the water if you have anything worse a scrape or nick. Open wound and the ocean didn't treat me well.

Dude, a scab is still an open wound and an easy channel for infection

With me the puss in the bruise got infected via the scab, which made things a lot worse.

That being said, even a mosquito bite can be deadly if you get the wrong bacterial strain

ok, you convinced me. i surf with little cuts all the time, and have even had some good sea-holes going, but the knee is still pretty raw - still gaping and weeping at times.

i guess ill sit put, plus im scared my tailpad will rip it to shreds.

but im still gonna check the surf with my board. hopefully it will be flat.

Do whatever you want, just know the risks, and make sure the waves are good enough to justify said risks. They were for me

funny your story reminds me of when i was living in indo in the late 90s
i got a rash from wearing the same surf trunks everyday, old school cotton ones
got a rash behind my knee, started to hurt and then the next day i couldnt walk
went to the doc they put me on antibiotics told me no surfing no drinking no sun
i was on crutches for the next 4 days
next for weeks were probably the most boring time i ever spent over there
when i got back to the USSA the doc told me he had no idea what it was, that there were heaps of tropical diseases over there they couldnt even identify back here.

nimodo.

im sure the waves wont be all-time but im frothing.

thanks for the stories. hopefully they will keep me in check come dawn.

Had a skating injury that fileted my shin down to the bone. When I finally asked my doc, once the stitches were out if it was cool to surf, he said "sure, just take it easy."

Went logging at Rincon a week later and within 6 hrs, my leg was ballooned to twice its normal size. They ended up re-opening my scar and debriding the wound channel down to the BONE. It was not a pleasant experience. I was on IV antibiotics that were strong enough to make me hurl, and at one point there was a possibility that they would have to amputate below the knee. Came out ok., but it was a scary few weeks. Staph aint nothin' to f#ck with.

In summation, not worth it. Stay out of the water.

I am not in the tropics, and there are no big cities, farms, or rivers to create polluted runoff nearby.
So, whenever I have a cut or something, I know the sea water will actually help heal the wound. Best thing there is.

I've done it plenty of times. Even surfed a river mouth with open wounds. I'm still alive.

i never had issues using the liquid bandage stuff. had stitches 4 a cyst cut out of my neck couple of weeks ago doc said stay out of the water 4 to 6 weeks i was in the water the next day. just cover it with the plenty liquid bandage (theres a spray or goop that u put on with a qtip either one works i like the spray better). then every time post surf wash it off real good in the shower with soap and then once its off keep scrubbing the cut to clean it out real good, then peroxide or rubbing alcohol to clean again, and cover with bandaid and neosporin. Thats my recipe never had issues but then again im not surfing in cali doodoo water. i might think differently then

My mentality as well. This thread is making me rethink it though.
