Anyone have experience on a cymatic and a hydroshort (squash)? A compare and contrast would be super helpful. Thanks

I'm also curious about a comparison between the Cymatic/OB1 and the Hydroshort. Especially any differences in rocker.
I've got an XTR EVO that I love, now I need something for better waves so considering an OB1 or Hydroshort. Any insight here would be much appreciated.

The OB1 is basically a Cymatic with a diamond tail. However I would presume that a diamond tail and a double bat-tail with a wing have some variances and would ride a little different!

The Cymatic has a continuous rocker (that I think feels epic). The OB1 is supposed to have the same rocker, template and rails as the Cymatic. The tail of the OB1 is pretty thinned out (like the Cymatic). Because of the wide tail, the Cymatic grovels well, but it holds in bigger waves with power too. I would presume the same goes for the OB1.

The Hydroshort has a higher tail rocker than the Cymatic, but its not continuous. The outline of the Hydroshort squash looks just like a Hydronaut, but has a wider nose, wider outline, and has a better turning radius. The rocker feels slightly different in the Hydroshort, compared to the Hydronaut, but I felt a similarity to the original Hydronaut (I had a 5'6" Hydronaut pintail and I currently have a 5'5' Hydroshort Squash).

I think the Cymatic (and probably OB1) has a much broader wave range, because of how small the board is and how the tail is a little wide. I think it could probably be a 1 board quiver for most everyday So Cal waves and its my favorite to ride. I've never had a bad day on the Cymatic!

The Hydroshort seems like it was intended to be an all-arounder (similar to the Cymatic), but I think it felt the best in shoulder high waves. I heard Goodfish say the same thing. I personally thought I would be able to make the HSS work in everything but it really felt best in about chest to shoulder high waves. The original Hydronaut seemed to "lock" into waves but the Hydroshort seems to be more free and have a much better turning ability. I've had some of my best BS turns on the HSS. Both the Cymatic and HSS are very responsive! Hard to go wrong with either of them.

Ill post some rocker pics of the Hydroshort Squash ("HSS") and Cymatic later. jam_on

No but close enough. I'm off until 2nd week of January if you wanna meet up for a surf. We can switch up boards too, as long as you bring a board w a nose. I already know I wanna pearl pumping down the line on chopped noses. I'm just north of you but I drive down and surf oside occasionally.

As for measuring rocker:
1) balance your board on something at the midpoint deck facing down;
2) Put a rocker stick (any straight edge), using a bubble level at the midpoint on the bottom;
3) measure your rocker using a separate ruler.

But still post some pics, please.

Thanks. I was also trying to compare the hydrosquash to the Omni as a better wave board, and I stumbled across some Omni posts from you? Any thoughts? You havent mentioned the Omni lately here...fall out of the quiver?

That nose appears to be pointing to the left on the deck shot , reverse on bottom shot on the lefthand board .

This could bother some .

How does it look to you in person ?

I've got an SP2 (same outline, different rocker than the Cymatic) and a Hydrosquash. I like the SP2 in shoulder and under when the conditions are clean. If it's bigger or choppier, then I take out the Hydrosquash. Both my boards are in XTR. A guy I know who surfs the same reef as me has snapped 3 Firewire Cymatics in a row on their first session. Not even in big conditions - about shoulder-high.

At the time that I had an Omni (52) I had an XTR SP2 (52) and they felt very similar! Too similar for me to keep both so I let go of the Omni. Ive thought about getting another Omni in a 53, but for me the Cymatic replaces the Omni because of how good it goes, so really no need for both.

Looks fine in person. I think it might be the iPhone rounding the edges of the photo.

Thanks a lot, super helpful. How would you guys rate the hydrosquash on the user friendly scale? On par with all the hybrid models out there now (Lost quiver killer, new flyer etc etc)?
