Both seem similar to me, skatey with a little more hold then a twin. I have never ridden a twin plus trailer but I am considering getting a WD esque board and getting some funky fins.

Can anyone who has ridden more boards and fin setups describe the difference to me?

i love the quads and ride them a htuosand times mroe often..but after finally getting back on a 2+1 the last few months...gotta say i still ove them....and dont mind missing out on thrusters..blah.

the 2+1 is very loose, but with the right fin combo you can virtually amke a quad feel jsut as loose...if you use twin styles froints and TINY trailers. Get the five fin option and choose for yoruself. the versatility of both is the bonus...you can tighter up the 2+1 setup with a thruster set if needed...and you can tighten or loosen a quad by fins or fin positions.

not to leave you more openended. Fin sizes and locatiosn are KEY to yru specific answer.

I almost always like a twin + trailer setup but a quad is a love/hate relationship. Quads take some experimenting but once fin sets and placement are dialed in (I am starting to feel Lokbox or at least FCS Fusion is crucial on a quad) they become sooo much fun

Like 20w, I don't really like thrusters because I like that loose feeling and 3 fins make me feel like I am dragging kelp even when its big.

If you compare surfboards to overpowered muscle cars its like this
twin = wet ground bald tires
twin + trailer = positraction
quad = locker

My entire existence is a failed gotcha

twin plus trailer is faster out of the gate but needs to be nursed a bit in OH juice; quad can be surfed as hard as you can surf. twin plus trailer is super fun and practical for 95% of SoCal surf.

Revisiting this topic for the pending summer small stuff. What are you all thinking for fin setups when June hits and the fantom south swells don't?

I’m just here to drink some beer and ride high volume boards.

I have a coil mega narrow minded coming my way for ultra small wave grovelling. 5'7x21x2.5 1.something ft^3 setup as a thruster. I may run the griffin 4-5/8 fronts and smaller trailer or try this set from von sold:
http://www.mdsurfstore.com/product/phantom-twin-fins-and-keel-set-of-3-fins

I also will run it as a quad+von-nubster w/ the front fins pushed forward in the boxes and see how it goes. gotta try a bunch of fins to settle on what feels best.

2+1 is rad but I think I prefer quads backside. gonna also experiment w/ the von sold nubster a bit more. maybe try a bigger one in the front slot.

If you have a 5 box fish- twin + trailer turns sharper with a little more hold in the big side fins. A quad skitters on top of the wave without the deep hold.
In crappy waves top speed feels about the same in both set ups due to the wide outline of the fish providing the drive.

hmmm

to me quads feel far quicker

the only advantage is that you have a pivot point with rear trailer IMO.
I had an RNF that was 5 finned. The twin+trailer had a slow but drivey down the line feel. Quad was faster, got up and maintained speed better carved harder but like i said, didn't really pivot (not even slide would just sort of stall) and I didn't get as much projection laterally out of a bottom turn, but got far more projection vertically

this is very board and finplacement specific.
if you look at the RNF classic, the side fins (meant to be ridden as twin + trailer) are set way further back. This set up probably goes best as a twin. But 5 boxes, usually are set up for a thruster on the sides, like 11 !/4 up, quad is probably a better option here.

boards I've ridden that were only quads didn't have that much of a problem pivoting as the boards that were set up as thrusters but just with boxes

Like a blind man at an orgie, I was gonna have to feel my way around.
