Am I the only one that cringes as the mobs of "rippers"/"soul searchers"/whoever the fook rolls around so proud of their above it all attitude with a soft top under their arm? "I'll ride whatever bro.... I just want to have fun"

Yes...... maybe I'm too old and too judgmental but if you're not under the age of 8 or JUST beginning how does buying a soft top help your surfing, help support local shapers, help you sleep better at night?

I guess it's the same way wearing those peter pan tight nut hugging pants doesn't bother dudes.

Looks like time has passed me........ all washed up

it's a fashion, it'll wash through soon enough.

I ride wavestorms.

Got a problem with that? Come talk to me.

I don't understand it.

I was talking to a guy in the water about his soft top and he was going on about how good it felt. I asked him how much it cost and he told me $320 with tax. WTF. I thought they were $80 or similar in price to the wavestorm. All these people are dropping a bunch of money for a crappy soft top thanks to JOB and youtube. The local shapers do basic boards for $495 or so. I tried asking the guy why he just didn't save a couple extra dollars and buy a regular board and he wasn't having it and said "soft tops just feel good".

Oh, I rode a wavestorm once and it looked like a banana when it flexed with my 220 lb body on it. Rode horrible. I'd rather not surf then ride a wavestorm.

I don’t have a problem with them so long as the user isn’t an arse pirate, but I do wonder why they are such a “thing” now. This is not a place where you can afford to blow rare decent waves on a regular basis, yet foam pounders do just that.

*they have zero drive
*they seem to have a harder time catching waves despite volume
*i see them broken all the time, and they cost money
*they give the the rider a misguided sense of “its all good bro, I’m just here to have a good time, don’t mind me while I burn you every chance I get because my board is sooooooofffft as a marshmallow bro and totally non threatening bro”.

They flex too much......at least every one I've tried. Cause rashes too.

Shops love them now because they bring in better margin than a hard board and they don't have to worry about shipping damage or being damaged in the shop.

Bingo.

Work great on a crowded summer day with shitty waves. They encourage fun on otherwise mediocre days. However I don't get the guys I see riding them when it's bombing. But in any case, what other people ride doesn't bother me too much one way or another. Very easy to ignore.

Duck dove under a sup yesterday. He got nailed by a set wave on the outside not realizing where the lineup was.

It’s less scary duck diving around rogue soft tops.

Archer, not the arrow.

And the “all good” bros are riding fishes and midlengths sporting mustaches and man-buns. Wavestorms are fun to ride when the waves are junky. They’re fun to ride at popular summer beaches where there are 50 kids playing in the shore break. They are fun to ride at 2 foot, high tide rincon when it’s breaking 14 inches from beach. They’re fun to ride at heaving Point Mugu when the other two boards you brought broke.

Only soft board I’ve ever ridden is a Wavestorm and I’d never pay more than what those cost for a soft top.

My son has one that uses regular fiberglass or hard plastic fins. He rips on it. Perfect for crowded small days at NJs designated surfing beaches where 75 people are packed into a small area designated for surfing.

I've been surfing for 35 years. I bought an 8'0 softtop, my local surf shop branded, for my 6 year old. It was $350. That was 3-4 years ago and the thing is still going strong. I ride it all summer long. I don't own a long board and this thing catches the tinniest of ripples. I surf next to people on 10 foot logs and catch more waves than them. I didn't buy this board because of JOB. I'm sure aesthetically I would look a lot better on a long board on those days. I'll probably get one at some point but until then the soft top does the job very well.
