Was goofing around with google maps this morning and was looking at Molokai. From the looks of the imagery it seems like there would be really good surf there. Through the years I've seen very little about surfing there and even a google search didn't yield much. What's the story? Is there good surf there? Always windy? Access problems? Just seems like a place that we'd see a lot more from.

What's the difference between conservatives and liberals?

Conservatives get angry when you lie to them. Liberals get angry when you tell
them the truth.

Why is Moloka'i not a well-known surfing destination when accommodation, electricity, food, water and beer are easily available and there are rental cars and good roads to access several quite good waves on the island?

One word explanation: Locals.

I went there once for the channel SUP. Locals is the answer. Molokai is a whole other world.

Can we just let Hawaiians have one thing? Do WP have to ruin EVERYTHING?

The outer islands seem kind of gnarly to surf as a visitor unless you know a local.

I do really want to do a fly fishing trip there.

The Hawaiian Sovereignty movement started on Molokai. They were tired of the US government using the Island of Kaho'olawe as a target bombing facility for decades. The sailing of the Hawaiin canoe Hokulea to Tahiti, navigating only by stars helped boost the movement. Young up and coming musicians such as the Brother's Cazimero, Country Comfort, The Makaha Son's of Niihau, Gabby Pahinui and his Son's, Peter Moon all helped to strengthen the movement.

Walter Ritte, Dr. Emit Aluli both residents of Molokai helped push the sovereignty issue on returning Kaho'olawe back to the Hawaiian people. Dr. Haunai Trask, from the University of Hawaii, a very radical woman on Hawaiian issues went tooth and nail at the US government. Very vocal and quite knowledgeable of the specific issues going on. And two well respected Hawaiians from Molokai tried to swim to Kaho'olawe from Molokai and were lost. A tremendous loss was felt within the locals.

Molokai is like Ni'ihau. unrelating to today's world. A small, tight-knit community of folks who balk at people coming to Molokai who want to "improve" it. Molokai has battled for years for it's homegrown lifestyle. The state-run Super Ferry, Norwegian Cruise Lines were both booted from it's shores. The old hotel up on the west end of Molokai went belly up years ago and has never reopened. Molokai has seen what has happened to Oahu, Maui and the Big Island over the years. They don't want it for Molokai.

As for surf, I only know of a small right-hander, just outside of Kaunakakai & have bodysurfed the west end. It's
not a "surf destination," just a quiet little Island that wants to be left alone to thrive, as it always has.

somehow this feels like this is just another troll from the maga lovers

but yes, there's some good surf at some special spots

unwritten local law
unless you are related to the duvachelles, dudoit or other local families,
you don't mess with the locals there
and you don't mess with molokai
walter is the unwritten mayor of molokai

they don't fool around
and don't take kindly to stupid outsiders

off da hotel side
