That video is so good! The first wave is a Hydronaut and the rest of the waves are the Hydroshort! DT is ripping! What wave height would you say those are? 4 foot to 5 foot?

Today is the first time I read the 4-8ft thing you posted.

I don't care about the board's wave size description. You brought that up.

You told me I neglected to adhere to it, then told me I was a fool for not adhering to it.

I didn't have anything to adhere to or not adhere to at the time.

The rocker was more relaxed than my Hydronaut and the tail was abit less pulled in in if I remember. And it was 5'6 - two inches shorter than me - and a bit wider. It paddled better than my Hydronaut. I assumed shorter board for smaller hollow waves with push.

If you never saw a description on the board, then why did you say this:

How did you know what conditions the board was designed for?

Compared it to my Hydronaut.

Shorter

Wider

Less rocker

Tail less pulled in

Less flip in the nose

Saw it as a toned down version of the Hydronaut.

As stated above.

If we're talking in dick measuring terms those waves are anywhere from 2 feet to double overhead on the sets.

Nobody is claiming it does. You were the one who declared the board an unequivocal dog. You can see why people might challenge that point, right?

I said my Hydronaut was great. It was particular about conditions as would be expected. Really was an exclusively a barrel board. Was designed with BM in mind and this I know for a fact.

I was told by industry folk some years back FW tries to stay away from releasing boards that do not have wide appeal and instead release boards that tend to fit the most commonly encountered types of surf.

That's why I was surprised they released this board. With the very pulled in tail as well as the rocker it really doesn't lend itself to a variety of conditions or surfers.

This is a company that is 100% centered on units sold and maximizing profits.

Not to sure about this

I think they are known for pretty odd designs into the groundbreaking Tomo line :-)

The Nev designs in the beginning were very nice and within the norm .

I thought the Hydronaut worked in a variety if conditions. I’d rather have other boards that suit those other specific conditions... but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was a “dog”.

Vader and Vanguard were very hard for shops to move, according the the people I talked to who were trying to move them.

Oddities are their marketing strategy. Some of those oddities have not worked out, including the Dan Mann penis board.

I'd like to know how the standard designs like the Gamma, a board that IMHO looks pretty fantastic, is selling.

I would argue that they are more experimental than any other brand. Their cost per unit is estimated at $150 each landed. So their biggest expenses is introducing new models to their Asian staff and getting quality control dialed in with new design, but what really is the cost of that? Asian labor of learning new model. So that being said, to introduce new models would be less risky financially than other brands using US labor. FW doesn't use molds, so there isn't any crazy start up costs. They could make 100 of a new model with the only cost being training the new staff on it and taking photos/video for website and marketing. Another brand could not do something so crazy when their cost per unit is much higher with higher labor costs.

I think they are very interested in making as much money as they possibly can, period.

This isn't a labor of love thing.

That's what I'd have called it.

Capitalism 101...what's the big deal?
Go scrape a surfboard out of a tree yourself if you can't squeeze a bro deal out of a local shaper eeking out an existence selling boards to tight arse customers who want everything for nothing.
If that local shaper has the business acumen to become a world wide seller then they get branded a sell out anyway.

Producing a crummy product is not Capitalism 101.

I've never asked for a deal from a shaper. Ever.
