Yeah I saw that, but he said he got the wrong message. I'm wondering who up the phone tree is sending out something so unclear when dealing with something that is so black and white?

Define alive.

No brain activity?

If someone you loved chose to end their life, would you try to bring them back in the world they deliberately chose to leave behind?

Seriously. How can this happen two times?!
Rest easy Sunny

Coma vs. Brain Death

Patients who suffer brain death are not in coma. Patients in coma may or may not progress to brain death.

Patients in coma may be in deep coma or may survive in what is termed a "vegetative state." The difference between these two groups is that a deep coma patient usually requires hospital care, while a patient in a vegetative state may be released to the family for home care. The individual in the vegetative state has a lot more lower-brain function, and a bit more upper brain-stem function, than a patient in deep coma.

In either case, the patient is considered legally alive. Patients who are in coma will have some neurological signs. The amount of brain activity is variable, and extensive clinical examinations are performed on these patients. The physician(s) observes the patient for any sign of electrical impulse leaving the brain as a result of an external stimulus. Patients in coma will have these signs; patients who suffer brain death will not.

So based on the above and what we're being told through social media posts we can assume Sunny is either in a deep coma or a vegetative state and not brain dead correct?

reality unfortunately could be that Sunny suffered some brain damage. what extent, who knows. just the suicide attempt might have cut off enough oxygen to his brain to cause permanent brain damage, even if he awakes. think people have to prepare themselves that the full healthy Sunny you once knew might not come back if he pulls out of it.

Trach'd and PEG'd foreheadslap

"But his vitals are great!"

Ignorance is bliss.

Sad story.

I doubt this is bliss.

I couldn't imagine a daughter going through that with her father. She hopes for a miracle. who wouldn't? Most people don't know what you know. Be humble in your knowledge and experience.

some docs are commenting:

not to rain on the parade, but sunny has very little chance of making any kind of actual recovery. If he does survive, he will likely have severe brain damage and kidney damage.

A trach/PEG is a breathing tube through the neck into the windpipe, and a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, a feeding tube through the abdominal skin into the stomach. The trach and PEG are needed in order for the technically alive person to be ventilated and fed in a long-term care facility full of other technicallys, awaiting their miracles too

He would remain comatose at this stage. Total life support. Due to the substantial loss of oxygen to the brain, he will probably never regain more than 50% cognition/function. Even that is prognostically optimistic. I pray for a miracle.

From what I've seen I think the condition can be summarized by his brain was without oxygen for a significant amount of time and he has severe inflammation in other major organs such as his kidneys which has resulted is in some form of renal failure.

One of my irrational fears is being locked in: complete consciousness but can't move or talk.

I hope the best for Sunny and his family.
