Anyways, I know he's reading this shyt, along with JJR and the rest of the boys.
Good luck on any new adventure you have JP. I'll take moon kitty from you and mom and dad
If need be. He will be wearing a frog house shirt the first week. Haha.

Moon kitty passed away a few years ago. Moonlight was sold to Chris Christenson...

Howdy Bromigos,
JP here, owner of Surfy Surfy.
Here is the dealio:
I do not own the historic building in Leucadia, CA (built in 1926) that we were occupying, famously know as the Longboard Grotto until 2008.
A friend of a friend of mine bought the building from Sam Ryan, owner of the Grotto and hired my wife, who is an architect, to handle some of the restoration. The building was in terrible shape.
I was about to sign a lease in downtown Encinitas for a brick & mortar surf shop as we were outgrowing the small showroom at Moonlight Glassing, my family surfboard factory my dad started in 1979.
After meeting with the new owner of the building I quickly changed plans to have the shop in a portion of the old Grotto, the landlord wanted to split the building into 3 suites.
At the time, my wife and kids were living in the Valley of Dreams mobile village about 400 ft from the Grotto, so the commute was incredibly appealing.
After two years of restoration (which still isn't finished if you've ever walked down the back alley) we opened Surfy Surfy Surf Shop in May 2010.
The theme of the shop was all the surfboards I grew up riding by the shapers who have been using Moonlight Glassing all these years (by the way, this year is the 40th anniversary of Moonlight).
The shop was loosely based on my early childhood memories of Sunset Surfboards in downtown Encinitas.
When we opened up we got a fair amount of press because that same summer over 100 retail businesses in our zip code closed down due to the shitty economy.
I should also note that my second son was born Feb 2010, just weeks before we opened the shop.
That was crazy and I do not recommend having a 3 year old and an infant and a new business.
So, from May 2010 to Jan 2019 we had our little 1200 sq ft surf shop poking along.
I sold 1,000 boards a year average, including customs.
My private label t-shirts and hats did really great, I quickly abandoned stocking larger surf brands because it was clear nobody cared. We did really well with stuff like fins, leashes, ding repair kits, etc.
And, while we were not the Grotto, never tried to be, we did sell a lot of vintage magazines and interesting used boards.
In 2012 my business partners opened up Coffee Coffee next door, I am minority shareholder in that.
With my lease up in 2019 I already knew a major rent increase was coming.
I gotta be honest with you all, I wasn't feeling it.
I was getting pretty burned out on retail life and now with my oldest son about to go to middle school, I really didn't want to grind out long days all summer in the shop and just have my kids on ipads all day.
I was stressing over the decision and everyone I consulted had wildly different opinions.
Coincidentally, Margaret Calvani, owner of Bing Surfboards along with her shaper husband Matt, called me saying that their lease on their shop two blocks south was up in 2019 and she wasn't that happy with the location.
A solution! We quickly arranged for Bing to take over the Surfy Surfy space.
My last day open was Jan 31st. Bing moved in all Feb and reopened March1st.
All the leftover Surfy Surfy gear quickly sold out, so if you were to walk in today you would see zero Surfy Surfy presence.
However, Margaret and I are currently building a new run of Surfy gear and I will pick up a few counter shifts after my kids spring break in mid-April.
Bing is stoked because they like being wedged between coffee and beer, and this is the 60th anniversary of Bing so they are having fun putting together the new shop, which is 1,000 times nicer than my janky shop was.
To be clear, Bing and Surfy Surfy are separate businesses but we have some nice collabs planned.
I still have my social media and online store and am still delivering custom surfboards, mostly Gary Hanels and Campbell Brothers Bonzers.
Clear/no color GH's start at $600
CB Bonzers start at $750
and, I can build Surfy label surfboards shaped by Mike Slingerland, price starting at $550
Thanks for all the support all these years. I started the Surfy Surfy blog in 2005 and admit to neglecting it once Instagram took over the world.
I am reviving the old blog: Surfy Surfy blog
And keep your eyes on the Garage Sale section of my online store. I update it almost everyday as I clean out my storage unit.
thanks,
JP

That explains it. Always liked the store. I picked up some vintage surfer magazines I have framed in my house

Thanks for sharing this, JP. Sounds like a nice opportunity to spend some good times with your kiddos. Best of luck. I already miss the old shop frown

Best of luck JP. You and your family are good people.

I am pushing JP to run for city council. I am going to be his campaign manager. plus we can surf more now instead of me coming by the shop and telling him what he missed...

Do it!

Might as well run for president, this is the good time to do it.

I can do all the negative campaigning for you. smile2
