Here is the book I read. It has a chapter on humans not needing water and carbs when they do endurance activities.

It's kind of makes sense. People were dying in marathon races from drying too much water.

Read at your own peril.

"My friend, Dr. Paul Hornyak swam from Catalina to the mainland in the middle of the night in 2017 in 13 hours and 13 minutes!"

Just saw this on FB ..
Food for thought, to whomever, decides to make the swim ~
Best of luck! jam_on

I misread and thought you were saying uber hydration/carbs are necessary, I agree with you. I've done what 20w described paddling and also backpacking and I think the main thing I notice is more muscle cramping. I think I've fixed that for me now with steady hydration and certain types of energy foods.

Have you ever fully bonked where you body depleted all it’s glycogen stores? If not you have no room to talk. Keeping your glycogen up in exercise that lasts 3-6 hours is of extreme importance. Not to mention carbo loading makes a massive difference.

I did a 20 mile paddle over the weekend and consumed 2 gatorades and a gel and wish I had more.

I agree that having too much water is dangerous and that too many carbs causes gastric distress. But a gel and a bottle every hour seriously helps.

Btw 20w will crush it. I’m thinking of trying to go last minute but I doubt I’ll do it. On all the paddles with him he’s a good speed and pushes through the tough miles

I think the idea is when you adapt to using fat for fuel you can pretty much go forever.

Back when humans were endurance hunting springbok they didn't have access to carbs or water.

I been dieting and I cut way back on calories and carbs and I have been pretty much unable to work out in the gym.

So I see if you are using carbs as a fuel source, you're going to bonk in that endurance event.

I'm going to guess 50W is using carbs as his fuel source so your advice is sound in his case.

I think it's really hard to be fat adapted for fuel.

Eating carbs is pleasurable and adds to the quality of life.

I've been using these capsules that my Doctor recommended for cramps. I get the late night, sit straight up in bed, phuck me cramps, in my legs. Hurts like hell and I walk around outside for 20 minutes trying to stretch it back out. Ruins a good nights sleep. Just FYI. Amazon ... $38.00 1-2 capsules in the morning. Same for the evening before bed now.

I am hardly a diet/metabolism know-it-all, yet I won't let that stop me from blathering on....

It takes a bit of time to get your body to a fat burning metabolism. All those arctic and Antarctic explorers/adventurers usually start to change their diet and metabolism before they get their trek on, so it isn't like the body is going to go from one fuel source to another in a day very efficaciously.

Anyway, all of the above is already known to 20W-50, so, with that taken care of, time to start knowing you can do this.

roflmao Sounds like a handful times I did the same but inside my tent. My leg muscles so tight feels like they're going to snap. Laying flat on my back and doing a pelvic thrust up and down seems to help entirely. I have no clue why and thankfully nobody can see me doing it. ban
Thanks for the recommendation, I have stuff I put in my water and it stopped happening (it probably has similar ingredients). Like I noted above, steady hydration throughout the day and energy foods seemed to be the fix, and I had a bad habit of pushing on and on with little of either.
