Used to go out sooner when younger (did get sick a few times) as it is often great right after a storm moves out. However, I now try to wait 3 days after a major storm now (not easy to do). Can normally tell if runoff/polluted by floating debris...and that "rotten fish" smell in the water...weird you can smell the runoff. Definitely shower after your session if you don't wait to minimize risk!

Depends on the spot and how long it has been since the last rain. If it's the first big rain of the year, I'm waiting. If it's the second or third in a few weeks, I'm rolling the dice unless there is a river mouth or significant drainage nearby. Etc.

Only heard this was a thing for people in the land of the free. Doesn't apply in most places I've been / lived ... it's in fact my favourite time to surf during / after a rain storm.

That seems odd.

Often it takes 48-72 hoursa for the bacteria to bloom after all the runoff mixes with the sea water. I'll often wait more than 3 days after a heavy rain. Light rain, not so much, but ya never know.

If you surf after a rain you will die!

Oh and Fukishima too. Best to never go in ocean at all.

No.

Found a dead pig on the beach that day, probably drowned in a flash flood. Wouldn't do that again.

Check these guys out, same day.

Surfed pretty disgusting Rincon on Sunday after 4 days of nonstop rain. It was relatively uncrowded and looked fun so I said fook it. Nothing out of the ordinary yet but everyones immune system is different but yea def a US thing although I think other places you dont want to surf after rains for different reasons like sharks or crocs fishing in murky waters.

sounds like the 5 second rule

seen more friends get the mersa from the public showers on the beach that the homeless use for bathing

hard to see waste water overflow pollution unless you start seeing poop floating by you every now and then with foamy water but chocolate water is a no no unless you want to be a meal or just a taste. River mouths are the worse.

Kind of like paddling out into 20mph kona straight onshores. You know sooner or later the man in the blue balloon is gonna get yah. Almost died as a grom when a big one wrapped itself around most of my body while surfing in a blinding kona wind rainstorm. Barely made it to the emergency room for the shot being allergic to bee stings. I had an itchy full body tatoo of pockmarks for a long time.worse than measles as those little injection points actual die and peel off like a thousand mini scabs.
