He's obviously a very competent surfer (the man rips!), but to me something looks off. Just like it does sometimes when I watch QS/CT guys on what looks like too small a board. And if he is indeed 170 pounds and rides 26L, he is on even less volume than CT pros, which should ring some alarm bells, IMHO.

I'm pretty sure that he's 160 - at least that's what he says in his reviews.

And having seen him in person I would agree.

26L seems like and appropriate standard HPSB volume for his weight and ability level.

Something I've noticed is a lot of boards look strangely wide under his feet.

Got my Ghost out in some pretty solid waves today and had a really good time. It wasn't huge but the sets were well overhead and long fast walls with a bit of long interval power.

I was impressed by how much drive I was getting and how easy it was to make long sections. I was riding a shortboard for the first half of my morning session and I got dusted on a few, just couldn't keep up. Once I took the Ghost out I didn't really have that problem. I also made some very steep and late drops that I didn't expect to. Kind of felt like easy mode compared to riding my normal board.

I got a bunch of good turns and flubbed a few. I think I am still getting used to how much hold the tail has and I keep expecting it to break free when I push really hard through a turn (which it finally did a few times) but it holds longer than I expect it to.

Ive been riding the JJF med but I want to try a more upright fin to see if I can tighten up the turns a little.

Noel's Hayden darkside vid :

He spends a lot of time talking about rail flex at the center of the board.

"Slingshotting Forward "

Video shows its never in the water or weighted .

I agree that his technical explanations do leave me scratching my head at times. I had a laugh out loud moment during, I think, his first review of a Carbon Wrap vs PU construction. He used one of those doo-dads that tracks your wave-count, ride lengths, speed, etc. and the average speed of the PU was faster than that of the CW. I've also noticed that he hasn't compared average speeds since...

Had another good session on the ghost. Made some drops that i probably wouldn't have on my other board. Only thing is it seems a little overkill on some of the softer non set waves. Thinking i need an everyday shortboard to compliment the ghost. Phantom?

I have a Stubby Bastard in helium (used to have a PU). They're fantastic boards. Works great in 2/3 foot with a bit of curve up until you need a Ghost/ round pin. Rode my PU in pretty macking Gas Chambers on the NS. Held in the barrel fine and paddled really well. I was sitting at around 180 at the time using the stock 5'11. On the 6'0 now at 185 which is also great. I think it has better low end than the Phantom and is less foiled out. Highly recommend as the wide point forward design will compliment the Ghost and will feel similar with better low end. What are your dims and what ghost are you on?

I'm 6'5 around 205-210 with wetsuit. Riding 6'5 ghost stock dims which is 20.38 x 3". I dont want too much low end just need it to be a little more useable in the chest-head range when its not hollow. Foiled out should be okay as the wave I'm getting it for is all pocket. Was looking at maybe the 6'4 phantom stock dims.

Stock stubby bastard is narrower/less volume than the phantom at the same size. Nose looks a bit narrower as well. I see how they would work in similar conditions - but it might be more of board-style preference? some guys like the more traditional sb shape and some like the ghost-style shape. Not all small waves are the same either. I remember feeling like I could sit on the tail at most hawaii spots - even when small. In NE beachbreak (even in same size waves), its much different

You might really like the Pyzalien as well. One of my favourite boards ever. 6'4" 20 1/2" 2 5/8" 38.40L

How do you get that much foam at 2 5/8"?

Haha if you picked one up you'd see. Tons of volume at the chest/front foot and mega flat deck. The tail is sensitive and thinned out though. Gas pedal and great drive off of the front foot and loose and spicy when you step back. Very fun board. Used it from two foot grovel to 10-12 foot faced Haleiwa.
