San Francisco this weekend - 11/12/18 01:02 AM

Headed to SF this weekend for work (th-sa). thinking about bringing a wetsuit and seeing if I can rent a board. Thursday looks a little big for me but fri/sa could be fun.

Whats the water temp?
Any recs on board rental?

Thanks!

Re: San Francisco this weekend - 11/12/18 01:41 AM

Wise surf shop might have rentals

Or there is away co

Water in mid 50's

North end of the beach is mellower, it gets bigger the farther south you go

Good times

As retodd said north end is usually smaller, and a fun wave. Also donít discount the bigger day as you might get the novelty of surfing under the bridge.

Hey, I'll also be in SF Thurs-Tues. Wasn't planning on surfing, but forecast looks good. Awayco has a 6'4 ghost. Now I gotta find a wetsuit.

Re: San Francisco this weekend - 11/12/18 06:39 PM

I'm kind of surprised awayco doesn't have wetsuits too. Remember, they have 2 shops in SF. One normal board HP shop and one Fish/retro shop.

Yeah, makes sense.

Need to find one so I can cross OB off my bucket list.

Re: San Francisco this weekend - 11/12/18 08:18 PM

The surf has been small but kinda fun. It has been really crowded w/ kooks and long boarders being 90% of it. Air is really smokey and I get a lung burning sensation, supposed to stay bad all week.
Water recently got cold. a good 4/3 or more is advised. Haven't had much of a Fall season yet and I don't expect a solid swell this week.

You can rent from Aqua Surf, many do. I don't know what you are looking for but I have old boards you can borrow. Doof has bigger boards and surfs early morning but I don't think this swell is calling for that(bigger board and early morning).
I usually go out mid morning if you or anyone wants to join you are welcome.

i've rented from aqua surf a few times; can walk to the waves from their shop.

Re: San Francisco this weekend - 11/13/18 12:17 AM

Seconding that the air quality is no joke. Not enough to keep me out of the water if it's good, but you'll feel it after a couple hours.

Re: San Francisco this weekend - 11/13/18 01:38 AM

Aqua rents wetsuits?

I kinda want to surf, as every time I've been in the last few years it's been blown to shit.
Doof / Heel, lets shred! Janitor too.

They used too. I would be surprised if they stopped. They are right up the street from me. Highly likely it will be stronge off shore. Swell? Sand bars? Tide? Ready for some good surf, summer sucked and fall is not offering much.

4/3 or more? Are you guys wearing hoods? I was going to bring a 4/3/booties and maybe gloves but doubt it. Should I bring a hooded 4/3?

Thanks everyone for info on board rentals, i appreciate it.

Also, appreciate offers to surf but my mornings will be tied with work and up I will be with my wife so I'm not sure what window for surf I will have. I do appreciate the hospitality.

Depends how you are with cold water. From the Atlantic, I would say 4/3 and booties hood if you want. Enjoy the nicest time of year.

Re: San Francisco this weekend - 11/13/18 04:03 PM

Gloves no, hood and booties maybe depending on your tolerance. I've been wearing a 4/3 no hood/no booties and been fine but I tend to run a little warm. Also depends how long you want to be in the water.

As Mr. Heelnipstr said, you guys have good timing... it's been a pretty awful fall but waves looking fun for the next week or so.

Would love to surf if everyone gets together and happy to lend a bigger board if the swell actually materializes...

Re: San Francisco this weekend - 11/13/18 06:15 PM

VaB - I don't think Wise does rentals. How early can you surf? You got a way to get around? Thursday won't be "too big"...besides there is a certain perverse thrill of getting outside during a rising swell. Wait a day, and you'll miss that, but maybe avoid those clean-up sets.

Racer1 - I will be able to surf in Thurs and Fri mornings but have to leave for work too soon. Saturday I have more options. So for those days, I am in the water at 6 AM, out by 7:45-ish.

Due to craptastic summer and more crap-like October, my game is only starting to be where it should have been at end of September. Past few days of smoke and small conditions and large crowds not helping.

Good thinking. Surf Fuerte, from The Canaries, almost died last year from the cold.
Surf was fun just now. Oily glass sandbars firing. Nice thump to them.

"At 1 p.m. Thursday, San Francisco had among the most polluted air in the region, with an air quality index reading of 211. The index in San Jose was 182, 174 in San Rafael and 198 in Oakland; these readings are in the "unhealthy" range. "Good" air quality falls in the 0 to 50 range."

That was abusive and maddening, but also rewarding. Lost peepee in the first 5min. Ducking with a hood sucks. Took me 20min to get out the back. Picked off a nice left right away, barely avoided getting caught inside again. Spent the next 40min chasing peaks up and down the beach, narrowly avoiding disaster and triump simultaneously. Finally gave up and just enjoyed the blood red sun and of course a beautiful right comes to me. Long steep wall all the way through to the inside bar. Kicked out and got abused. I donít know how you guys surf here regularly - Iím exhausted.

Thanks Peepee for the 5/4, booties and 7í2Ē it was fun!

Thanks for the surf report!

Sounds like a good session to me. wave2

Typical to me is looking at the ocean and crinkling my eyes to keep the sand (that is being blown in my face) out.

But now I am curious....you've surfed in vog conditions and now wildfire smoke. Which is worse?

I looked and looked and wanted it today. Two days ago when the air wasn't half this bad after an hr in the water I had a hard time breathing and went in. Today with the smokey air and decent paddle needed I walked the walk of shame home.

Tomorrow is forecast for better air smile

Ha, sorry wasn't that hectic this time. Leisure surf with Heel, but I did get two little closeout barrels. So I can say I got barreled in SF. Then we got back to Heel's place and his dog put my clothes in a pile and was guarding it from me.

Iceman we were out at the same time. He had a yellow/orange twin ripping lefts and pulling into some nice pits. I was on the green Vaquero sitting out of position or getting dumped on by the sets.

Glad you had a good time Racer, you are welcome back anytime. cheers

Re: San Francisco this weekend - 11/20/18 07:17 AM

Single fin? Pretty sure I saw you on some good set waves. I saw one guy on a twin that had a fancy mustache going. Was that you racer? After my second wave, the same guy said something like, "Looks like you found a fun one with an open face." I had a hood and plugs in so I may have heard wrong. Not bad for midday on a Monday!

Here's a quick snap I took before paddling out.

Fun to surf with Racer and thekadvang on what turned out to be the worst day of the 5 days.

And to that one person who thought I wouldn't make the drop, so paddled next to me ever after I said I was going right (someone was going left on the other side of me) and then you pulled out at the last second only to go over the falls, if you were patient, you could have caught the bigger wave behind mine, but no, you had to do what you did..

I can honestly say thatís the first time Iíve ridden a bus through the city with a 5/4 fullsuit in a trashbag. Little did I know there was a small hole in the bag. No need to worry though as when I got off at Market I fit right in with my wet pants and dragging an ambiguously heavy trash bag. Then handed it off to Peepee as he got on the BART in the worst possible way to return a borrowed wetsuit to a generous erBBer. Must have looked like an odd drug deal. Sorry buddy, but MAHALO!! Epic weekend guys. Thank you so much. I really owe the erbb SF crew for such generosity. Got in 3 sessions from head high to nearly 3x overhead. Rode 4 different boards. Got in turns and tubes. Exciting place.

I'd say energy is the same, maybe slight edge to North Shore but only cause the storms are closer. BUT, when you factor in the wetsuit, hood, water temp, fog, smoke, seals, sharks and lack of crowd, I'd say maybe scarier than Hawaii. In Hawaii, it's sunny and offshore and you're in boardshorts and when getting worked you get pushed into channels and deeper water. OBSF death zone keeps you there even pulls you back out from shore to the impact zone - after doing an underwater somersault I came up facing shore but moving back out to sea. Mindfuck.

Anyone get a session in Thursday or Friday of this week (12/6-12/7)? I mind surfed it while watching the Surfline cam from my desk at work. Looked insane. Mercifully, the swell drops to below 10 feet this weekend when I can actually get in the water.
