Grom pro pimping!

Grom pro pimping! - 01/09/19 12:41 AM

I was scrolling through instagram the other day and saw a sponsored ad from an account. The account belongs to an 11 year old, future wanna-be pro surfer! Paying money to advertise on instagram to boost followers?! This girl's parents are pimping her out! I think this is sad on many levels.

Why sad? She obivously have some skill. And to make high level in sports, must start at young age. Look at Chloe Kim. Start very young age, competition, and now set for life with gold medal, easy life, lots of money.

This girl already surf ulu, kauai, northshore, traveling world. Exciting I wish I had as a kid.

It is state of society in that ads help make followers. But in a way always been like that. Famous people make movie ticket sales, even before internet. Band sells tshirts and goods at concert.

It's incredible how many parents pimp their kids out to the "industry". One thing that amazes me about surfing is how so many people can't just do it for fun, they have to also try to be part of the "industry".

I've been seeing some really pathetic Instagram ads for grom surfers, adult surfers, surf photographers and crappy "surf" lifestyle clothing brands.

Facebook selling shovels during the gold rush.

That’s nothing. There’s parents pimping out their own kids much younger than that.

The worst are the guys on Instagram who are mid to late 20's and are still holding on to the dream. They list some third rate no name sponsors in their profile and post clips of them "ripping". If you're not on a major contract at that point, it is probably not going to happen.

Pretty much everything these days is marketed as "surf lifestyle".

Welcome to the wonderful world of competitive grom-surfing. My personal favorite aspect is the parent run social media platforms run by parents trying to create a brand for their micro-grom with inciteful posts on Insta and fakebook that the grom clearly could never have actually written.

If the surf industry had any decency, it would come up with development programs for kids that at least allow them to go to school through high school. Instead, they all drop out, are home schooled, all in the hope that they make it to the tour, and can stay there. It's horrible. I bet none of the surfers on the WSL actually attended and graduated from a high school.

Pro surfers may be the most poorly educated--and socially maladjusted-- of all professional athletes.

Why do you think they're all entitled?

Some are. Some aren't. Some will be pros, some won't. Some parents over-do it, some do it just for fun.

Doesn't seem like that big a deal.

I sense there's a lot of jealousy towards little kids who already surf better than most adults.

You're right. Kids have sponsors etc. and this is how the game's played. It is what it is.

I will say that at a certain point, other kids get tired of seeing the self-promotion. My youngest has stopped following even some of his best friends because every post was a commercial. Your little buddy in NJ might be the worst of them all shrug

For some reason I remember that my Mom+Dad were stocked
when I got good enough to get sponsored 4 decades ago. Sooo much cheaper to have+use some great new surf~gear, or for free even. I mean surfboards were expensive back then, $120.00 for a new custom board from Pacific West, so when Con Surfshop gave a young me+JP, Dexter, Van Dusen+Sicner a free new trade~in hand-shaped board by Bill Urbany or Mike Olivares, we took it, ya know!?! You would have too, yep, yep, yep...

Surely each + every 1 of you who are parents
do not like paying full retail for lil' Juniors surf equipment, right?
Nope, nope, nope...

I think this is what bothers many people including myself. It scares me that my kids won't be able to afford to live in SD unless they are at least in the upper middle class or higher pay scale. What are these kids going to have to fall back on? I'm proficient at hashtagging?

My Mom,
after I graduated Venice High, got re~married.
When the rent for house I grew up from age 13 onward to an adult was raised to $1,000.00 a month, well she+her new dude, her last husband, a machinist, had to move in~land to cheaper Culver City. My Mom+real Dad never could afford the down payment for an L.A. house, even waaay back in the '60's, '70's, '80's.

You got kids?
I don't, so take this from the eldest of my siblings with a grain of salt~water,
ya know?

Try to buy a house, condo, some kinda property.
And make sure your inheritance sheee~it is in order.
Pre~nup too if ya get re~married, so your ol' house, where the kids grew up,
still belongs to them, not your newest most recent wife. Oh ya, get some decent life insurance in case you die before you plan on doin' so. Your kids will be appreciative...

Funny you post this. My buddy's 3 bedroom 1 bath on Culver City is worth 1.3 million shocked

Yeah we do own but I can't see us in a position to give away anything at retirement age.

I did get supplemental life insurance so in case I go at least the wife can keep the house. If she leaves me I'm fucked... but who isn't?

Motocross is just as bad, believe me. They start them on little 50's and the parents yell and scream at them around the track. The sport is a zillion times more expensive than surfing, too. Many of these kids don't go to school at all, some are home schooled. Try talking to a pro moto guy. Not the brightest either!

I have a question for the Hawaiian guys. Hope this doesn't offend, but this has been bugging me.

Do they teach in Hawaiian schools that the past tense of see is seen? As in "I seen this guy catch a good wave." I can't recall ever hearing a Hawaiian say "saw."

Hmmmm…..I can handle the kids insta posts when they pop up. What I find hilarious are the posts of late 40's/50's who want "to be relevant" !! Maybe you were relevant, in your part of the pond, 20 years ago, but unless you were a top pro, you are most certainly NOT relevant!

Lol, I just said Saw in this thread. Anyway, I think it's more of local pressure to talk in a heavy pidgin accent to fit in. I was fortunate to go to private school (Kamehameha) and we were taught to speak proper English and punished if we didn't, but at family parties it took about 5 piledrivers from my Maui cousins for me to realize I had to speak pidgin to fit in with them.

Someone posted an interesting video on here a couple years back about the plight of Hawaiian kids and the schools and it spent a bit of time talking about the pressure on kids to not speak good English.

Oooh! Did I touch a nerve? Haha! I was sorta relevant back in the 80's. Sponsors and all that crap. I was king of the hill where I lived for years, and guess what? Injuries and age moved me down the line. I'll paddle out at O dark hundred to score waves without a crowd. I can't stand all the wannabes, used to bes, and washed up has beens Everybody surfs better than me and I could care less. As long as I get a few without a crowd, I'm happy. I know most of the top dogs in my area and they know me.

I run into those parents all the time since both my groms are skate crazy.
They always trip out on my attitude.

"Is your kid doing the comp next weekend?"

"no way!"

"why not ? dont you want him to get sponsored?"

"I want him to have fun"

The usually give me a weird look and leave me alone at this point.

I dont want my kids to be pro skaters. 80% of former pro skaters are on drugs , broke or have crippling injuries. Told my son he can own a company if he wants to be in the skate or surf industry.

Can confirm, my brother is one of the top three at Primitive with Paul Rodriguez. Not a bright dude (Paul, my brother is actually very smart).

Re: Hawaii public schools, my kids did just fine. Son starting to get acceptance letters for great colleges. Kahuku regularly competes with/beats Punahou in We The People, National History Day, Speech and Debate. It's the BYU Hawaii influence.

As far as home school goes, the Florence kids all did public school K-12, and they are all readers, all very savvy and articulate when you sit down and talk to them. Jack, Pete, and Trent Johnson all Kahuku, all UC grads, all very smart. JOB was in special ed though haha. Kalani Chapman too. Mostly behavioral though.

I dont want my kids to be pro skaters. 80% of former pro skaters are on drugs , broke or have crippling injuries. Told my son he can own a company if he wants to be in the skate or surf industry.

my grom got hooked up for his surfing,

doesn't do or ever intend to do comps, run an insta = get free stuff has been the go so far,

it certainly helps financially having support for stuff when they're growing quickly.

Who wants to pay $35.00/40.00 for a new tail pad for Junior's next surfboard?
Which, after he or she starts to ride the board, realizes that they do not really like how it rides.
Pay full retail for a leash, board bag, boardies, fullsuits, even new surfboards too? Yikes!
Glad that you too found a way to save some $$$...

Hawai’i public schools are terrble. It’s up to the parents to assist the kid further. The schools are underfunded and not a priority for the state.

Not to say you can’t be successful coming from one. Just that the schools lack in quality compared to the private schools.

I went to both public and private growing up in Hawaii.

I think that's everywhere now, not just Hawaii. Its the culture of the public school system as a whole. I live in one of the most well funded/over funded school districts you'll find and it really is no different in terms of academics other than the school system has money to burn. You as a parent have to take it upon yourself or if you can afford it send them to private school.

Nope, not everywhere. Big generalization based on what? Your own anecdotes?

Very good public schools on this coast.

No need to spend college money on primary ed here.

Are you trying to shame a pre-teen girl who looks pretty stoked to have some new boards?

Ahh yes the grom comps are cool AF for that!

My kids have done a few and they got BAGS of good stuff.
My son won one at our local and got a new deck, new wheels, trucks and some clothes.

I was referring to the kids who parents drive them all over for comps and dont seem to enjoy skating anymore.... its shitty

This makes sense. The reason I asked was because I was listening to a podcast with Cliff Kapono, a Hawaiian scientist with a PhD. He used "seen" in the past tense like I described above and it got me wondering where that comes from.
