Never been before. I expect to get annihilated.

I’ve heard that flying out of Tijuana is a good way to go. Anyone done this? I could drive to TJ from home in about 5 1/2 hours.

Tips appreciated.

Going solo.

Place to stay near (easy walk to, or right at) Zicatela?

How are the crowds 2nd week in September?

Boards, I want to take four....

8’6 Padillac
7’6 CI Gun

Want to bring those two for sure (unless forecast for not much swell then the 8’6 stays home).

The other two (with third alternative for not much swell) choosing from this....

K-step - 6’8 x 19 x 2 1/2
Fort Knox - 6’5 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2
OG Flyer - 6’0 x 19 3/4 x 2 91/6
Wizard Sleeve - 5’8 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8
Twin keel fish - 5’8 x 20 3/4 x 2 1/2

I’m also considering.....

Matt Moore mini gun quad - 6’10 x 19 x 2 5/8
J7 (sort of like a very thinned out Rusty Slayer with a very narrow tail) - 6’1 x 19 x 2 3/8

Most average guys would have their bases covered taking the 8'6, 6'8 or 6'10, and something for the point. I haven't been in two decades so that's about all I can offer.

So no 7’6?

Funny, because I was thinking if I needed a 7’6 i might as well just ride the 8’6....

Bungalows zicatela is where I usually post up - fairly cheap rooms with a/c right on zicatela in between the main lifeguard tower peak and the right. Breakfast is included (get the surfer's breakfast) and they have a deck area on the 5th floor with a good vantage point to scope out the waves or to chill and watch the sunset with tecates. September is less crowded and still pumping. Sounds like an epic trip, enjoy.

I surfed it small and still took a beating.

How long are you gonna be there? If you need the 8'6 then you probably want the 7'6'' as a backup. So then the third board is the 6'8". If you don't need the 8'6' then probably the 6'8" and 6'5" and maybe the 7'6" even if its under DOH because if its barreling all you need to do is get into the barrel and paddling power reigns supreme out there. I cant imagine that 6'8" catching waves very well, those dims are super knifed out.

We looked into flying TJ to Huatulco recently; it was cheaper and easier to fly a major US city like LAX/SFO/etc to Mexico City and then over. I think the same holds true for flying into Puerto. Just fly Aeromexico if you can and avoid Volaris at all costs.

It's good to be overgunned there, the place is bigger than it looks from the shore and everything happens pretty fast.
